Bachelor’s Degree Program Curriculum in International Economics and Trade (Delivered in English) at Nanjing Normal University

I. Program Introduction

Nanjing Normal University has a long history in business education, dating back to the establishment of the Finance Department in Sanjiang Normal School in 1902. Since 1994, the university has officially enrolled undergraduate students majoring in International Economics and Trade. The Department of International Economics and Trade currently consists of more than 20 faculty members, all of whom hold Ph.D. degrees, with more than 80% of them obtaining their doctoral degrees from overseas universities or having experience of overseas academic exchanges and visits. The department also offers doctoral and master programs in Applied Economics and has established a comprehensive system that develops talent from bachelor to doctoral level.

In line with the requirements of the new era and grounded in the development of the “new business discipline”, our bachelor’s degree program has established a top-notch model to cultivate talents with global vision, social responsibility, exploration, and innovation, as well as profound academic quality in international economics and trade. The program has distinct features in terms of discipline construction and talent cultivation in the fields of international business, international investment, and international services trade. It has developed a modular curriculum system targeting international talent cultivation, established an internationalized teaching system, built top-tier experimental and teaching facilities, and set up a set of internship and practice bases centered around outstanding enterprises. With these advantages, this program fosters an excellent environment for the cultivation of high-quality students in economics.

English requirements for admission: IELTS is in principle no less than 6.0, or TOEFL is no less than 80 in principle. If not, the Chinese side will organize an English interview.

 

II. Educational Objectives

The program aims to cultivate advanced interdisciplinary talents who will have, respectively, a broad global vision and a profound understanding of Chinese culture, a deep grasp of the current status and trends of international economic and trade development, possess comprehensive knowledge in the fields of economics, management and international trade, are familiar with Chinese trade policies and international regulations for investment, economic and trade, fully understand the operation mechanisms and development patterns of domestic and foreign economies, investment and trade, master a foreign language commonly used in international settings, possess excellent communication and coordination skills, innovative ability and entrepreneurial spirits, are well-versed in the procedures and specific operational methods of foreign trade, are capable of taking positions related to international economics and trade and global strategic management in multinational corporations, international financial institutions, public economic and trade departments, and play a significant role in promoting economic and trade exchanges between China and other countries.

 

Educational Objectives

Objective 1: Graduates will possess a broad global vision and a profound understanding of Chinese culture while promoting economic and trade exchanges between China and other countries.

Objective 2: Graduates will master theories and knowledge in the fields of economics, management and international trade, be familiar with international investment, economic, and trade regulations, and fully understand the operation mechanisms and development patterns of domestic and foreign economies, investments, and trade.

Objective 3: Graduates will possess the professional skills necessary for engaging themselves in international investment, international business, and international service trade, and be proficient in foreign trade procedures and specific operational methods.

Objective 4: Graduates will have high aspirations, a sense of responsibility and accountability, and proactive attitudes toward personal growth and the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship. 

Objective 5: Graduates will possess academic excellence, strong practical skills, and multidisciplinary knowledge, and be capable of taking positions related to international economics and trade in multinational corporations, international financial institutions, free trade zones, and public economic and trade departments.

1-1 Graduates should possess a broad global vision and a profound understanding of Chinese culture, comprehend Chinese economic and trade policies, and have the ability to use scientific methods to analyze economic issues.

2-1 Graduates should develop a global vision and entrepreneurial spirit, demonstrate integrity and teamwork, and have sharp insights into complex international economic and trade issues.

2-2 Graduates should possess the ability for independent learning and critical thinking, and have a solid foundation in economic sciences.

General Knowledge

3-1 Graduates should master general knowledge including an overview of China, Chinese language, computer skills, and sports.

3-2 Graduates should master liberal arts knowledge including humanities and social sciences, science and technology, arts and aesthetics, and other liberal arts disciplines.

Disciplinary Foundation

4-1 Graduates should master the foundational theories and methods of advanced mathematics, probability theory and mathematical statistics, and linear algebra.

4-2 Graduates should master the foundational theories, methods, and techniques of microeconomics, macroeconomics, management, applied statistics, and accounting.

Professional Knowledge

5-1 Graduates should possess a systematic understanding of specialized theories, methods, and techniques in international trade, international finance, econometrics, industrial economics, international trade practices, international settlement, and the contemporary Chinese economy.

5-2 Graduates should be familiar with Chinese and its major trading partners’ trade guidelines, policies, and regulations, as well as the operational rules of international economic organizations such as the World Trade Organization, and master theoretical and methodological approaches related to international business, international investment, and international service trade.

Knowledge Integration

6-1 Graduates should possess the ability to employ scientific methods to acquire knowledge through various channels, such as classrooms, literature, the internet, internships, and social practices.

6-2 Graduates should construct a comprehensive knowledge system, master the fundamental theories and knowledge of international economics and trade, as well as modern economic theories and methodologies, possess skills and analytical methods in international economics and trade, and understand the cutting-edge theories and trends in the field.

7-1 Graduates should possess exploratory and innovative thinking in conducting economic research.

7-2 Graduates should demonstrate proficiency in qualitative and quantitative methods in economic research, and be able to apply statistical and econometric methods to analyze practical issues in international economics and trade.

IV. Duration, Credit Requirements, and Degree Conferment

A. Duration

The standard duration of the program is four years. Students are allowed to complete the credits within three to six years.

 

B. Credit Requirements

Students must fulfill the 132-credit requirement specified in this program.

 

C. Degree Conferment

Students who have completed the courses specified in this program obtained the required credits, passed the HSK examination as required, and met the provisions of the “Regulations of the People’s Republic of China on Academic Degrees” and the “Regulations for the Conferral of Bachelor’s Degrees for Full-time Undergraduate Students at Nanjing Normal University (Revised Draft)” will be conferred a Bachelor Degree in Economics.
