Korean (Bilingual in Korean and English)
1. Program Description
The Korean Language program of Nanjing Normal University was founded in 2003 and is the first key university program in Jiangsu Province to be authorized to offer degrees in the Korean language. In September, 2003, this program enrolled its first four-year undergraduates from around the country. In order that the students become competitive interdisciplinary and international talents specialized in two foreign languages, it started to enroll 5-year undergraduates for the Korean and English language program. Since the foundation of the program, teaching and research talents have been actively recruited and the staff structure has been gradually rationalized. This program has an outstanding staff team of five members, all equipped with a doctoral degree and experiences of studying or visiting abroad. This program has close cooperative and exchange relationships with such well-known universities as Korea University, Ewha Womans University, Chung-Ang University, Sookmyung Women's University and Inha University. In order to adapt to the demands of the times and the development of the university and bring into full play the advantage of the multiple majors and languages of the School of Languages and Cultures, this program aims at training international and highly qualified professionals proficient in two foreign languages.
2. Program Duration and Credit
This is a five-year undergraduate program, which can be completed within a minimum of four years and a maximum of seven years.
A total of 186 credits are required upon the completion of the program.
3. Curriculum
Three modules of courses are offered for the program: Basic Curriculum, Essential Curriculum, and Elective Curriculum. The Basic and Essential curricula are compulsory for a Bachelor’s degree.
The Elective Curriculum in the list includes extended disciplinary courses offered by the School into which an individual student is admitted, as well as cross disciplinary courses offered by other schools. Students can choose the extended and cross disciplinary courses according to their personal interests and career plans; however, credits should be approved by the School.

Comprehensive English (1)-(4) is a fundamental major course for freshmen and sophomores. Comprehensive Korean 1 is an elementary course for Korean majors. Through the study of the course the students will be able to grasp the phonology of Korean, the most commonly-used Korean vocabulary and grammar, as well as develop their reading skills. The students are required to possess the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and pass the exam of TOPIK-1 after completing this course.
Comprehensive Korean 1 is a compulsory elementary course for undergraduates majoring in Korean. It aims to help students grasp the basic knowledge of Korean and lays a foundation for further study of Korean. More specifically, through this course students will be able to grasp the knowledge of Korean phonetics, the basic and commonly-used vocabularies and grammars as well as some basic linguistic skills. The contents of this course include pronunciation and letters, the expression of numerals, directions, the expression of objects, honorific expressions, negation, time-system and tense as well as various sentence patterns. After learning this course, students should be able to grasp the basic knowledge in phonetics, vocabularies and grammar and have a solid foundation for further studies.

Comprehensive Korean 2 is an elementary course for Korean majors. Through the study of the course the students will be able to grasp commonly-used Korean vocabulary and grammar as well as develop their reading skills. The students are required to possess the fundamental communicative skills in Korean and the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing at the elementary level. The students are also required to pass the exam of TOPIK-2 after completing this course.
Comprehensive Korean 2 is a compulsory elementary course for undergraduates majoring in Korean.. It aims to help students grasp the basic knowledge of Korean and lays a foundation for further study of Korean. More specifically, this course helps the students master the basic vocabularies, grammars and linguistic skills. This course is the extension of Comprehensive Korean 1. The contents of this course include suffixes and terminations, active and passive voice, direct and indirect quotation, etc. After learning this course, students should be able to grasp the basic knowledge of Korean and have a solid foundation for further studies.

Korean Listening I is an elementary curriculum for Korean majors in the 3rd semester. The students learn from the basic Korean pronunciation. This course aims to help students master the Korean pronunciation correctly, and enhance their confidence in listening and speaking.

It examines the content of Korean institutional culture from the perspective of politics, etiquette, names, marriage, education and imperial exams. The profound connotations embedded within Korean material culture and its religious and philosophical tradition are explored through the discussion of clothing, food, architecture, festival, and art.

After completing the course the students will be able to express themselves freely with a better command of spoken and written Korean. Meanwhile, the students are required to achieve the 3rd level or higher in TOPIK.
Comprehensive Korean Ⅲ is a core curriculum designed for students majoring in Korean at the intermediate stage. It aims to help the students master more complicated Korean vocabulary, grammar, sentence patterns and expressions on the basis of the vocabulary, grammar and expressions that they learned at the beginners’ level. The students will be able to improve their practical language skills and upgrade from the primary level to the advanced level. This course covers vocabulary and cultural knowledge in such fields as daily life, transportation, geography, industry, science, education, religion, health, society, architecture, and environment, as well as more complex grammar rules..This course helps the students consolidate the knowledge they have learned and learn more complicated sentence patterns and expressions necessary for higher language proficiency. When finishing this course, students are required to reach a level above TOPIK-5.
Advanced Korean I is for students in the seventh semester. This semester is a crucial for further improving the students’ language proficiency and expertise. Each unit of this course consists of text, new words, grammar explanation, usage of phrases and exercises. The class exercises also include some mock tests of TOPIK to meet the needs of the students wishing to pass TOPIK examinations of different levels. By learning the Comprehensive Korean 4, the students’ Korean has been improved to a certain degree. This course, therefore, aims to enhance the students’ language proficiency through systematic training in vocabulary and grammar, so that all the difficulties and barriers that the students encountered during their intermediate stage will be cleared.

Advanced Korean II is a core curriculum for students majoring in Korean. The course of Advanced Korean II is in the eighth term. The eighth term is the critical for further improving the students’ language proficiency and expertise. Each unit in this course is composed of text, words, grammar language points and exercises. The class exercises also include some mock tests of TOPIK to meet the needs of the students wishing to pass TOPIK examinations of different levels. After the study of Korean of the beginners’ and intermediate levels, the students’ Korean has been improved to a certain degree. Advanced Korean III is a core curriculum for students majoring in Korean. Through the study of language and cultural knowledge at an advanced level, the students will be able to improve their skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translating. The students will have an expanded cultural knowledge and will be able to express themselves in oral and formal Korean and comprehend and compose academic texts as well. Through this course students will learn how to make an argument, analyze evidences and organize their ideas while writing.
The course Advanced Korean III is in the ninth term. The ninth term is critical for further improving the students’ language proficiency and expertise. Classroom teaching is student-oriented, focusing on cultivating their comprehensive skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. This course features originality in its teaching methods and contents, and it is designed to be pragmatic and feasible. Its contents are closely associated with the social life in China and South Korea with highlights of cultural phenomenon in the two countries. The students will have an understanding of the local customs and historical culture in both countries while learning Korean language. This course helps the students become the top talents of high language proficiency and good knowledge in culture. The textbook also has an MP3 CD which helps the students learn standard and authentic Korean.

Korean Writing 1 aims to develop students’ knowledge in basic theory of Korean writing. Meanwhile, students can have a good command of Korean writing skill. Through practice, this course lays a solid foundation for the advance course of Korean writing in different genres in the next semester.
First, Korean Writing 1 introduces the basic knowledge and theories of writing, such as Korean punctuation, the method of how to writes on lined paper, and the rhetorical devices in writing, building on which the course trains the students in composing short sentences, long sentences and essays.

Korean Writing II aims to help the students improve their Korean writing skills and techniques through the study of the theories of writing concerning different genres.. Korean Writing II requires the students to apply the fundamental theory of writing into practice. It trains them how to write in different genres such as exposition, argumentation, book report, prose, resume, letters and graduation thesis, as well as how to modify, proofread and assess the draft. In this way it helps the students improve their Korean writing skills comprehensively.

Korean Reading I is a core curriculum for undergraduate students majoring in Korean at the intermediate level.. It aims to improve the students’ Korean reading skills, including the application of logic analysis, such as making assessment, inducing and deducing. It also help the students expand their vocabulary and bring out their language intuition with extensive knowledge of this language. This reading training will expand the students’ scope of knowledge and make them become more cultured and more interested in reading.
Korean Reading I is designed for Korean majors at the intermediate level. The contents of the reading texts cover a wide range of the everyday life in modern Korea, such as clothes, food, housing, transportation, professions, etc. Through the course, students will be able to more about the daily life of Korean people, their thinking patterns and values, so that they will be prepared for the advanced study. Various topics are included, such as Korean society, culture, art, health, sports, sex, politics, economy, education, literature, etc.

At the same time this reading training will expand the students’ scope of knowledge and make them become more cultured and more interested in reading.
Korean Reading is a core curriculum for undergraduate students majoring in Korean at the intermediate level. The literary genres of the the reading materials include prose, exposition writing, travel literature, commentary writing, fiction, poem, etc. The students are required to comprehend contents of the texts and grasp the key language points. The ensuing class discussion will enables them to cultivate their critical thinking skills so as to improve themselves culturally and become more interested in reading.

Mutual Translation between Chinese and Korean is designed to enhance the students’ capacity of Korean-Chinese and Chinese-Korean translation. The course teaches theoretical knowledge of translation in class and the students are required to learn the theories through practical translation activities.
The teaching method of the course combines theoretical knowledge and practical translation. The theoretical knowledge includes the nature of translation, as well as its definition, function, quality, standard, process, skill and method. Meanwhile, the practical operations, based on the theoretical knowledge, are designed for the students to comprehend the theories through practical translations of words, idioms, proverbs, phrases, sentences and articles according to different topics and circumstances.
