1. Program Description

The Japanese program has admitted four-year undergraduates since September, 1998. Starting from the year of 2002, a five-year branch has been set for both Japanese and English learning. Seven instructors in this program include one Distinguished Professor in Jiangsu province, one Professor, three Associate Professor, one Lecturer and one foreign teacher. The six Chinese ones all have gained their Ph.D. and ever stayed in Japan for further studies. This program enjoys good connection with 10 Japanese universities, which provides exchange programs for students in our college every year for language study in Japan. In parallel, famous scholars at home and abroad are invited to give lectures much often. Different sessions of students are quite awarded for their great performance in various competition. The number of students passing the JLPT1 (The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test-Level 1) totals larger than most other colleges each year. On this basis, no graduate can be lagged out in job-hunting after finishing their study.

2. Program Duration and Credit

This is a four-year undergraduate program, which can be completed within a minimum of three years and a maximum of seven years.

A total of 186 credits are required upon the completion of the program.

3. Curriculum

Three modules of courses are offered for the program: Basic Curriculum, Essential Curriculum, and Elective Curriculum. The Basic and Essential curricula are compulsory for a Bachelor’s degree.

The Elective Curriculum in the list includes extended disciplinary courses offered by the school into which an individual student is admitted, as well as cross disciplinary courses offered by other schools. Students can choose the extended and cross disciplinary courses according to their personal interests and career plans; however, credits should be approved by the School.

Comprehensive English (1)-(4) is a fundamental major course for freshmen and sophomores. Its main tasks include the teaching of essential English knowledge, the comprehensive and strict training of elementary skills, developing students’ practical application of language, introducing reasonable methodology, and thereby ensuring a solid foundation for advanced studies in the third and fourth years.

Comprehensive English (1) & (2) requires that students further enlarge the vocabulary to 3500, competently utilize grammar in practice, and skillfully articulate via writing and speech-making. Essential English (3) requires that students further enlarge the vocabulary by another 2000, competently utilize grammar in practice, and skillfully articulate via writing and speech-making. Comprehensive English (4) requires that students further enlarge the vocabulary by another 2000, competently utilize grammar in practice, and skillfully articulate via writing and debating.

The teaching task of Essential Japanese (1) consists of vocabulary, warming-up text, conversation, grammar, and reading text from the textbook New Japanese 1 (lesson 1-15). It intends to teach the reading and writing of the fifty-tone map, the phonetic knowledge (voiced/unvoiced sounds, youon and sokuon) and tones, and the meaning and usage of 800 basic words. It also teaches pronunciation and writing of the Japanese Kanji, cardinal numbers, some quantifiers, the types of verbs and rules of verbal variants, the basic rules of adjectives and adjective verbs, the usage of some auxiliary verbs and auxiliaries. What’s more, it deals with some basic sentence patterns, and trains students’ listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating ability on the primary level.

The teaching task of Essential Japanese (2) consists of vocabulary, warming-up text, conversation, grammar, and reading text from New Japanese 1 (Lesson 16-20) and New Japanese 2 (Lesson 1-10). Details are as follows: the tone, meaning and usage of vocabularies in each text; pronunciation and writing of Japanese Kanji; the conditional and imperative forms of verbs; the meaning and usage of some compound adjectives, auxiliary verbs and verbs of giving and receiving; some expressions of speculation and persuasion; the usage of model verbs, metaphorical auxiliary verbs, and some auxiliaries; the usage of some formal nouns; other types of sentence patterns.

Details are as follows: tone, meaning and usage of new vocabularies in each text; pronunciation and writing of Japanese Kanji; the passive and active voices of verbs; the expression of honorifics; the usage of the auxiliary verbs, and some auxiliaries; the usage of some formal nouns, adverbs and asyndeton; other types of sentence patterns.

Japanese Reading is offered to students in their junior and senior years (all together 4 semesters). Students in their third academic year will be trained primarily in elementary reading, while in their fourth academic year in intermediate reading and advanced reading. Reading materials will comprise, besides articles in the textbooks, literary works, essays, and reviews as well as hot news reports and editorials downloaded from the Internet.

Japanese Listening and Speaking is a course designed to improve students’ basic listening and speaking ability. Students are expected to be able to conduct simple daily conversations in Japanese by practicing dialogues in simulated and real situations. As regards listening training, this course selects some materials (sentences, articles, dialogues, etc.) from Essential Japanese course to train students’ ability to identify word syllables and phonemes, and understand and memorize the content. Students are encouraged to practice conversations after comprehending the same material listened so as to lay a solid foundation for Advanced Listening.

Japanese Writing aims to teach students how to use vocabularies and sentence patterns learned in courses of Essential Japanese and Advanced Japanese to write articles in various styles. It also trains students how to summarize the main points and ideas of the articles, how to collect and analyze data, and how to write graduation thesis. Besides, it also helps students to revise their composition through analyzing the problems therein.

General Introduction to Japan consists of four parts—Japan's geography, history, society and culture. Lectures on Japan’s geography focus on Japan's geographical location, features and its district division, etc. Historical events are arranged in chronological order (form Japan’s Paleolithic Era to Showa Era) for students to catch glimpses of some important events and figures in Japan’s history.

Classes about Japan’s social and cultural conditions deal with Japan’s politics, economy, education, technology and the like.

Prerequisites: None

Business Japanese, which consists of two parts—business Japanese conversation and business Japanese writing, will involve teaching tasks of oral business Japanese, simulative negotiation and FAQs answering session. This course starts with teaching students the basic knowledge of writing business letters in Japanese and the etiquettes to be followed in correspondence. Hereafter, students are to read and study letters written by senior Japanese business personnel, categorized under subjects that correspond with such business activities as greeting and collecting information.

Translation (Japanese into Chinese) places emphasis on the importance of principles and etiquettes (20 rules) in translation. The lectures will center on the theories and techniques in translation, through analysis and study of examples. Specifically, this course will handle matters such as translation theories, the translation of words, sentences, widely used expressions pattern, articles for practical purposes and literary works.

Translation (Chinese into Japanese) emphasizes that translation studies should starts with etiquettes in translation, with special importance attached to the use of honorifics—students are supposed to know the differences among three types of honorifics, to promote students’ awareness of the importance of translation/interpretation. This course will train students in handling interpreting tasks on different occasions and for different purposes, and improving their skills to render subtleties in translation. Specifically, the training/instruction will be based on the analysis of the translation techniques used in examples, so that students can gain a more impressive understanding of translation theories and skills to guide them in practice.
