Italian (Bilingual in Italian and English)
1. Program Description
Our Italian program offers students a broad exposure to both Italian and English languages and cultures. The program will build your listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation skills, as well as enhance your political, cultural, and scientific sophistication. Our department vigorously supports a comprehensive training in students’ knowledge, practice, and creativity essential in an era of globalization. Students in our program are expected to have a good command of Italian and develop comprehensive English skills (students must achieve at least the level of TEM-4 in English). We firmly believe that your immersion in this five-year program will open many doors to you professionally, as the increasingly frequent economic and cultural communication and cooperation between China and Italy, as well as among other international relations.
2. Program Duration and Credit
This is a five-year undergraduate program, which can be completed within a minimum of four years and a maximum of seven years.
A total of 185 credits are required upon the completion of the program.
3. Curriculum
Three modules of courses are offered for the program: Basic Curriculum, Essential Curriculum, and Elective Curriculum. The Basic and Essential Curricula are compulsary for a Bachelor’s degree.
The Elective Curriculum in the list includes extended disciplinary courses offered by the school into which an individual student is admitted, as well as cross disciplinary courses offered by other schools. Students can choose the extended and cross disciplinary courses according to their personal interests and career plans; however, credits should be approved by the School.

Comprehensive English (1)-(4) is a fundamental major course for freshmen and sophomores. Its main tasks include the teaching of essential English knowledge, the comprehensive and strict training of elementary skills, developing students’ practical application of language, introducing reasonable methodology, and thereby ensuring a solid foundation for advanced studies in the third and fourth years.

Comprehensive Italian (I) is a mandatory course for Italian majors. Its goal is to develop the integrated Italian language skills for first year students. It aims to help the students to grasp basic knowledge of phonetics, grammar and vocabulary, acquire basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and communication, and become familiar with general background information of Italy, so as to lay a solid foundation for later study. It requires students to have a basic beginner’s level of communicating and reading skills in the Italian language.
Comprehensive Italian (I) is divided into six teaching units. First, it offers students basic knowledge of phonetics and grammar. Then, with the help of grammar training, it helps students to study vocabulary, sentence patterns and conversations that cover several aspects of daily life (e.g.: work, hobbies, letter writing and conversation over the phone, bar culture, holidays and tourism, etc.).

With the students having taken Comprehensive Italian (I), it aims to help the students to further grasp basic knowledge of phonetics, grammar and vocabulary, acquire basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and communication, and become familiar with general background information of Italy, so as to lay a solid foundation for later study. It requires students to have a basic, relatively good level of communicating and reading skills in the Italian language.
Comprehensive Italian (II) is divided into six teaching units. Building on Comprehensive Italian (I), it continues to help students to study, with the help of grammar training, vocabulary, sentence patterns and conversations that cover several aspects of daily life (e.g.: eating in restaurant, going to cinema, doing grocery, watching TV and going to concert, etc.).

Intermediate Italian (I) is a mandatory course for Italian majors. Its goal is to develop the integrated Italian language skills for second year students. It aims to help the students to solidify their learning in the first year and to have a better grasp of more complex aspects of phonetics, grammar and vocabulary, acquire relatively good skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and communication, and better understand the many aspects of Italian culture. It requires students to have a high level of communicating and reading skills in the Italian language.
Intermediate Italian (I) is divided into six teaching units. It helps students to study, with the help of grammar training, vocabulary, sentence patterns and conversations that relate to different topics (e.g.: school, money and job, tourism and Italy, Italian history, sports and health and opera, etc.). Each unit will offer authentic reading materials that relate to the topic.

It also helps the students to learn various forms of expression in different scenarios of daily life, paving the way for further language learning and a deeper level of communication.

The learning materials it offers are all authentic, including a large amount of audio-visual and media materials. Through progressive training of the listening and speaking skills, with the level of difficulty increasing, it helps the students to use the Italian language proficiently in daily communication and learn various forms of expression in different scenarios of daily life, such as: self introduction, asking about work and study, dates and weather, on the road, in restaurants and hotels, and talking about hobbies, etc. It allows the students to have a deeper understanding of Italian culture and customs during the process. Furthermore, it also paves the way for learning Intermediate Italian Conversation and Advanced Italian Conversation.

By the end of the course, they should have intermediate level of listening, and their level of speaking Italian will be improved as well.

Advanced Italian (Phrase I) is divided into 18 learning units. Each unit has a theme that covers many aspects, including: life in Italy, culture, society, arts, and etc. Each unit provides several journal or literary selections, along with related vocabulary, listening and grammar exercises.

Its goal is to help the students to learn essentials of Chinese-Italian and Italian-Chinese translation through translation theory learning and translation practices. It also aims to increase their vocabulary required for literary and business translation, and develop the competence of Chinese-Italian and Italian-Chinese translation. At the end of this course, students should be able to undertake general translation and interpreting tasks while ensuring the accuracy and elegance of the wording as best as they can.

Its goal is to familiarize students with the content and forms of different practical writing genres when they have developed their language knowledge and skills. At the end of the course, students should be able to have excellent skills of writing different practical writing genres, and improve their writing skills.
Italian Writing is a one-semester main course for senior Italian undergraduate majors. Its main contents include: content and formats of non-business letter writing, the style and technical terms for business letters writing, writing other practical writings, rules of creative writing and news report writing. This course combines writing practice with heavy reading, along with class discussions, analyzing model essays and peer review among students. Through various writing practices, students are able to grasp different writing methods, follow the right writing formats, and proficiently use technical terms phrases and sentence patterns, so as to improve the their writing skills.
