Internet and New Media

1. Program Description

The program of Internet and New Media, set up Nanjing Normal University in 2012, is one of the first programs related to New Media set up by colleges and universities in China. It follows the educational philosophy of School of Journalism &Communication, Nanjing Normal University, that liberal arts and science are interpenetrated with each other, technology and art are combined together, software and hardware are possessed simultaneously. In face of the new pattern of media ecology and communicating pattern, basically supported by new media technology, the program complies with the internal logic of new media development, adheres to the basic orientation of media convergence, and combines the basic theory of journalism and communication with new media practice in order to adapt to the news information communication and technology development, to cultivate pan-communication talents who not only have a solid theoretical foundation and attainment, but also have the ability of cross-media operation, adaptive to the era of new media.

The program aims to cultivate wide-caliber and versatile talents with new media thinking who know the basic theory of journalism and communication, master the new media technology; to provide professional personnel for media agencies, mass-communication companies, government agencies, enterprises and public institutions and other sectors, especially, to cultivate talents in terms of news propaganda, information transmission, media marketing and management for new media companies.

2. Program Duration and Credit

This is a four-year undergraduate program. The program duration can be shortened or extended appropriately according to students actual conditions, at a minimum of three years and a maximum of seven years.

A total of 147 credits are required upon the completion of the program, including curriculums of general education of 49 credits, basic curriculums of 30 credits, essential curriculums of 38 credits and elective curriculums of 30 credits.

A student will be awarded with a bachelors degree of Arts after completing the courses stipulated in the program, namely, after he or she gets total credits according to theRegulations of the People's Republic of China on Academic Degrees and Regulations of Awarding the Bachelors Degree of Nanjing Normal University.

Prerequisites:  Theory of Journalism

This course serves as an introductory course for students to gain an overview of communication theory and the history of communication study. The course, which represents a sampling of the outstanding breakthrough discoveries in mass communication research over the past six decades, introduces students to a broad range of issues concerning the role, effects and limitations of communication in modern society. Upon completion, students will have a full understanding of communication studies and communication theories, which can be implemented to explain practical communication phenomena and conduct communication researches.

100503142219  Fundamental Page Design (3.00 cr.)

This course systematically introduces the basic page design and production knowledge and methods. The main contents include: the basis of graphic design, Web page elements, Web page editing and optimization. The course has distinct cross-media and cross-disciplinary characteristics. For the purpose of application,it starts with the practice of the page design and production, focuses on helping students master basic technology theory, basic operating skills and application techniques, pays attention to the students’ perception, understand and application of page design, pursues the combination of latest theory and practice.

With the development of computer science and Internet technology, new media plays a more and more important role in our daily life. To be a competent broadcaster in modern communications, it is necessary to be well informed in basic application of new media, webpage making and site administration. This course systematically explains the elementary knowledge of website establishment, web design and content edition. Lectures including: website planning and design, site management and release, Basic of System Program Design, webpage-editology, image processing and optimization. Based on the reality of web utilization, this course is aimed at developing students’ ability of master the theory and operation in networking business.

100503142210  Introduction to Media Convergence (3.00 cr.)

This course is one of basic courses in Major of Network and New Media. It introduces the history, current situation and trend of media convergence, clarifies its concept and explores the approaches and methods of convergence between traditional media, such as newspaper, broadcasting, television etc., and new media. It focuses on the production of information, process of communication, conception of receiver, transformation of regulation, media ethnics, etc., and forecasts the future of media convergence totally.

100503143031  Introduction to Mobile Media and Communication (3.00 cr.)

This course will be divided into two parts: theoretical explanation and practical analysis. Theoretical part mainly contains: 1, mobile media development history, present situation and trend;2, mobile media propagation characteristics and propagation mechanism;3, mobile media user analysis and the effect of communication;4, mobile media industry and management. Practical analysis mainly explains the different types of mobile communication applications, including news, video, instant messaging and social networking client case analysis, mobile gaming app analysis, based on geographical location case analysis, mobile payment client case analysis, life service client case analysis. Each case will be conducted to teacher explanation and student interaction to enhance the students’ application ability of the subject.

This course will systematically introduce the basic theory of network-based communication and give a brief analysis of the characteristics, mode, audience, technical social and cultural characteristics. This course will focus on analyzing the amendment of the classical communication theories, comparing the differences between the network communication and traditional communication, and how this difference will change the reality of our existence.

At the same time, this course will summarize on the network technologies, the spread of technological changes and the importance of the spread of information technology in the network. Hot issues will be discussed in class to help the students think about a serious of unexpected public emergencies.

100503143014  Theory and History of Communication Study (3.00 cr.)

This course is one of compulsory courses in Major of Internet and New Media. It introduces the history of communication theory, the study in US, Europe and study about technology and communication in North America. It involves main theory schools in communication research and their history of development, such as empirical school, critical school and media ecology etc. 

100503143027  News-gathering and Report-writing (3.00 cr.)

News Gathering and Writing is the instrumental and basic course of the journalism discipline. Combined with the characteristics of the major of Internet and New Media, this course focuses on introducing the basic knowledge and the operational methods of news gathering and report-writing. In addition, this course tries to help the students to develop their practical abilities to gather the news clues, to prepare for and conduct the interview and to write different types of news story.

This course is the independent development course in Internet and New Media Major. This course takes the improvement of the students’ practical abilityas the main goal, paying attention to application of basic knowledge. It applies the action teaching methods, integrates the theory and practice, improves the theoretical and practical abilities of the students.
