Chinese Language
Information technology plays a significant role in the development of contemporary society. Based on the current needs of society for arts talents, learning the training model of the elite cultivation from foreign well-known universities, according to the new ideas of “language technology” and the new construction guidelines of ‘Science and Technology-Oriented, Society-Oriented and Application-Oriented’, the Department of Language of Science and Technology established the new Chinese Language major, which is an interdisciplinary major of teaching and research among art, science and engineering. We also proposed and practiced the concept of talent cultivation, ‘Two Acts’ (mental design ability and operating ability), and ‘Two News’ (the ability to update their knowledge and the creative ability).
The Chinese Language major recruits students from art, science and engineering. The guiding principle of this major is: based on the contemporary language technology area with insights for the future frontier science and technology. With the combination of linguistics and related disciplines, theory and application, the department of Chinese Language puts much emphasis on mastering research methods and application skills and aims at cultivating the multi-talent elites who can meet the requirement for the development of modern society and technology and can combine applications and researches together with an international perspective. We always adhere to the combination of theory and applied research, thinking and practical ability, internationalization and elitism.
Centering on the objective of multi-talent elites cultivation, highlighting the interdisciplinary of art, science and engineering and technological means, the new curriculum system of the Chinese Language includes four main courses: Theoretical Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Applied Mathematics and Cognitive Science. There is also a Language science and Technology Laboratory for the students in this field. The training model of the elite cultivation and the curriculum system reflect the originality. ‘Language Technology Courses' was selected as the excellent courses in Jiangsu province.

4. Core Courses and Introductions
100501012006 Basis of Linguistics (3.00 cr.)
Linguistics is more than one edge, multi-level perspective of the discipline, and social sciences, natural sciences, scientific thinking have a closely relationship with it.Today with the development of cross-growing science, linguistics becomes increasingly important. "Linguistic Foundation" mainly introduces the basic theory of human language, study the nature, function, structure rules, evolution of the history and methods and the use of language and other aspects of the acquisition.
100501013016 Semantics (3.00 cr.)
Semantics is a subject of studying language meaning. Research on Chinese semantic has a long history which can be traced back to the Xun-gu period. In 1920s to 1930s, it was the incubation period of Modern semantics, whose important contents include semantic feature analysis and semantic field construction. This course mainly introduces the basic theory of Semantics, research methods, and semantic system, semantic unit, semantic feature analysis and field construction, sentence semantic structure and analysis, additional meaning, semantic evolvement, semantic fuzziness, ect. Research on semantic fuzziness has become a new direction in semantic study in recent years.
100501013019 Chinese Grammar (3.00 cr.)
This is a specialized course for the major of Chinese Language students. The course covers the attribute and units of grammar;the division of parts of speech; phrase classification and hierarchical analysis, polysemy disambiguation of phrases, sentence patterns and other classes; sentence analysis, sentence and sentence group, giving priority to with classroom teaching.
100501013022 Pragmatics (3.00 cr.)
"Pragmatics:an introduction" is based on the theory and application of linguistic meaning researches. This course teaches basic principles and guidelines that can make proper expressions and accurate understanding of meaning in different situations. This course instructs systematically the context, direct words, conversational meaning, presupposition, speech behavior, conversation structure and so on. During the teaching process, theoretical teaching and example analysis are adopted as the teaching methods, so that to guide the students to understand the basic concepts and theories, improve their analytic ability and research ability for essential of language communication, and make them truly master the theories and methods for analysis of contemporary Chinese communication.
100501013028 History of Linguistics (3.00 cr.)
History of linguistics is a subject matter which studies the clues of linguistic development at a macro level. Linguistics has a history of 2600 years since its beginning, which can be divided into 4 stages: ancient linguistics, semi-modern linguistics, modern linguistics and contemporary linguistics. To streamline the linguistic development and figure out the various items of schools of linguistics and their views of language, studies in history of western linguistics are essential. As a science, linguistic study was developed in Europe during the first 25 years of the 19th century. However, many ancient civilizations have thought about the matter of language in a philosophical way and conducted philological studies for reading classical literature, and without these studies the modern field of linguistics as a science would not exist today. The content of this course involves the language studies of ancient India, ancient Greece and Rome, and studies in the Middle-Ages and Renaissance. It also includes an overview of areas such as historical comparative linguistics, modern linguistics. As a whole, the focal points of this course are major branches emerging in the history of linguistics and their representative figures and respective ideas. This course will also focus on the history of the general principles and methodologies adopted by linguistics.
100501013031 Cognitive Psychology (3.00 cr.)
Cognitive Psychology is the specialized courses and meanwhile places great emphasis on methodology. It is deepened in the professionalism on the basis of general psychology courses. As a new subject, Cognitive psychology started in the 50 s of this century and has become an independent schools. It uses the computer as an analogy to human brain in order to reveal the method of information input, coding, storage, exchange, operation, retrieval, extract and use in human brain.
100501013034 Programming Language (3.00 cr.)
C language is the most widely used programming language. With good functions and flexibility, it can be used for exploiting system software and application software. This course explains the basic concepts of C language and grammar rules, mainly teaching C language programming as it is used in Chinese Information Processing. The course asks students to master C language data types, operators, expressions, statements, common functions, and compile simple C programs to process Chinese and English corpus and data files, and have a basic knowledge of compiling, debugging and running programs.
100501013040 Chinese Information Processing (3.00 cr.)
Chinese information processing uses computers to process Chinese characters and Chinese texts in order to implement input, output, retrieval, understanding and generation of Chinese language information. The course introduces basic knowledge such as Chinese character set encoding and the computational structure of electronic dictionaries, and introduces the research status and methods of topics such as Chinese character processing, speech processing, word processing, sentence processing, information retrieval, information extraction, text classification and automatic abstracting. The teaching contents involves three main pieces: the basics, focusing on computational information processing; research topics, reflecting current research emphases of Chinese information processing; research methods, giving a brief overview of statistical methods, giving an educational focus to linguistic analysis.
100501013043 Data Structure (3.00 cr.)
Data Structure(DS) is an important and fundamental course of Chinese Information Processing. In the course, it will introduce the basic data structures (including liner list, tree and graph) and algorithms (including seeking and sorting), as well as their applications in Chinese Information Processing and other fields. The course follows the “theory+practice” way, adapting the textbook “Data Structure (Programming in C)” by Weimin Yan. All the programming codes are given in Abstract Data Type and standard C, which will help to solve the problems in the students programming practices and improve their ability to model linguistic phenomenon, logic thinking and programming skills.
100501013045 Reading and Writing of Language Technology Papers (3.00 cr.)
The course of Language and Scientific Papers Reading and Writing introduces the structure and characteristics of the language and scientific paper. Besides, it guides students to read some representative papers, professional journals. Most importantly, it introduces the subject choosing method, research process, the way of writing a paper, and the way of modification, ect. In the teaching process, it leads students to find their research subjects, to collect data, to prepare students the completion of theses, also the experimental paradigm of psychological process in language activities.
