From May 22 to 24, Professor Wesley Baldwin from the University of Tennessee School of Music and his wife, soprano Melisa Barrick Baldwin, visited Nanjing Normal University and offered a violin master class for students from NNU School of Music, giving them demonstration teaching and direct guidance.
Professor Wesley Baldwin, a renowned American cellist and the founder of the Plymouth String Quartet who currently serves as the youngest Professor of Cello at the University of Tennessee. He is the president of Leonard Rose Memorial, associate director of the Wintergreen Summer Music Academy, a member of the New World Symphony Regional Audition Committee and the artist-in-residence with the Plymouth Quartet. He also serves as the conductor of the Knoxville Youth Chamber Orchestra since 2006. Soprano Melisa Barrick Baldwin is a versatile vocal artist and the founding member of the Michigan City Chamber Music Festival. She is an alumnus of the Peabody Conservatory and the University of Maryland. As a prizewinner of various American and international competitions, she serves as the specially invited artist for many music festivals. Fluent in the fields of opera, early music and new music, she often goes on performance tour with orchestra in America and around the world. They are model couple in the American music field and often perform in collaboration.
During the visit, Mr. and Mrs. Baldwin offered a class for students in School of Music. The two of them respectively provided lots of targeted professional guidanceto students who major in vocal music and violin, giving detailed analysis and demonstration about the style and the background of tracks and instructing each of the students with great patience. Although the master class is short, teachers and students from the School of Music benefited a lot from the face-to-face instructions offered by the two skilled artists.
On the evening of May 24, Mr. and Mrs. Baldwin held a wonderful concert in Suiyuan campus. Professor Baldwin performed some classical tracks of solo cello such asCello Sonata and Etude of The United Statesand Mrs. Baldwin sang songs such as Records of Melody, Maggie and Milly and Molly and May andRest, Rest, Rest.Their excellent performance won thunderous applauses from time to time. At the end of the concert, they performed The Last Poem of Wallace Stevens together to the piano accompaniment, bringing the whole concert to a new high. Boyu Li, an excellent student from the School of Music, served as the piano accompanist for the concert, who got high praise by the two artists.
