On September 10, 2019 the Opening Ceremony and the 35th Celebration Ceremony for Teachers’ Day was held on the Xianlin campus of Nanjing Normal University in the presence of Minqiang Hu, secretary of the NNU Committee of the CPC, Guoxiang Chen, president and deputy secretary of the NNU Committee of the CPC, Zeping Yu, the general secretary of the Hong Ai Charity Foundation, Jiusheng Li, vice president and standing member of the NNU Committee of the CPC, Hongbo Shang, deputy secretary of the NNU Committee of the CPC, Lixin Tian, NNU vice president and the standing member of the NNU Party Committee of the CPC, Kangsheng Fu, NNU vice president and standing member of the NNU Party Committee, NNU Vice President Xiaojin Zhu, Jiandong Miao, NNU vice president and standing member of NNU Party Committee, Xuyu Zhang, NNU vice president and standing member of the NNU Party Committee, Leiming Ren, NNU chief financial officer and standing member of the NNU Party Committee, Youlian Sun, NNU vice president and standing member of the NNU Party Committee, Weiming Xu, the standing member of the NNU Party Committee and secretary of the NNU Commission for Discipline Inspection, all new teachers, leaders from all schools and departments, student representatives and all the undergraduates of the Class 2023. Youlian Sun hosted the ceremony.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Before the opening ceremony kicked off, all the five thousand students and teachers present sang the song Ode to the Motherland together, waving national flags. Along with the song, the national flag and the 70th anniversary memorial flag were unrolled and “I love you China” demonstration boards rose and stood still in the hall. With passionate melody and sincere singing, NNU students expressed their best wishes to the prosperous motherland.
The opening ceremony officially began with the national anthem sung by all the students and teachers present. Then President Guoxiang Chen gave a speech themed “Carry forward NNU ideals and forge ahead to become top-class talent”. He started with a warm welcome and sincere congratulations to 4618 freshmen from 67 countries of and six continents, then expressed his best wishes to the NNU faculty in recognition of Teachers’ Day. In his speech, the president briefly went over the 100-year university history of Nanjing Normal University and mentioned renowned professors and masters emerging in different historical periods of NNU. Based on the school history and the current situation, he shared his understanding of “top-class talent” in this new era and encouraged students to develop the following mindset: have the motherland in mind and the globe in view, be dedicated to serve the people and foster a team spirit and an enterprising spirit. President Chen also noted that all freshmen are expected to draw an overall plan for their college life and cherish their time, to develop independent learning, put what you learn into practice, get along with people and keep fit. He also invited all freshmen to join him in his favorite ball game. At the end of his speech, he made clear his expectations and best wishes for the Class of 2023 and that they can draw inspiration from the profound heritage of NNU passed on for more than a hundred years and build themselves into top-class talent of the new era having a sense of responsibility, an open mind, a sense of humanity and outstanding skills.
In recent years, Nanjing Normal University has registered remarkable achievements in building itself into a top-class university and nurturing quality talent. These efforts have won NNU recognition from society and have attracted a quality undergraduate student pool. To encourage the Class of 2023 for further achievements, NNU held an awards ceremony. Vice President Kangsheng Fu read out the decision on awarding excellent undergraduates and the Deputy Secretary Hongbo Shang presented awards to student representatives of excellent undergraduates.
This year, NNU has for the very first time adopted the internet audition system to select freshmen representatives from the Class of 2023 and 68 inspiring students in total signed up to for the audition. In the end, Jincheng Yao, from the School of Chinese Language and Literature, and Xinshirui Zhang, from the School of NARI Electric and Automation, were selected as the student representatives to deliver speeches at the opening ceremony. Rui Mu from the School of Marxism Studies and the president of the NNU student union, also made a speech to share her NNU stories and her growth in college with all the freshmen.
Fei Shen, the student advisor representative, the 10th National Student Advisor of the Year of Colleges and Universities and deputy secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Journalism and Communication, shared her thoughts and suggestions regarding the growth and development of the students.
With over one hundred years of history, NNU has witnessed generations of dedicated teachers. On this occasion of the 35th Teachers’ Day, NNU decided to commend excellent teachers who have plunged themselves into the education work wholeheartedly and diligently for the last school year. Jiandong Miao, vice president and standing member of the NNU Party Committee announced the decision on awarding excellent teachers including the Yi Xi Elite Teachers Award, Moral Model of Teachers and Advanced Individuals of Teacher Ethics etc. The party secretary of NNU, Minqiang Hu, presented the Moral Model of Teachers and Advanced Individuals of Teacher Ethics awards to the teacher representatives. The Yi Xi Elite Teachers Award was presented by Jiusheng Li, the vice president and standing member of the NNU Party Committee and Zeping Yu, the general secretary of the Hong Ai Charity Foundation.
Professor Guo’an Tang from the School of Geography, the teacher representative, national model teacher and a national renowned teaching master, gave advice on how to make full use of the precious but fleeting college time and hoped all students could stand on their own two feet and make achievements through hard work.
At the end of the ceremony, the school song was sung by all the teachers and students in the hall. Following that, Party Secretary Minqiang Hu hosted the first lesson for the Class of 2023 undergraduates.
