On May 4th Youth Day, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League and the All-China Youth Federation jointly awarded the 24th "May 4th Medal of Chinese Youth" in recognition of outstanding models and representatives among all the youth in China. Xiuxiang Liu, an outstanding alumnus from the School of Education Science of NNU, won the highest honor given to Chinese youth—the "May 4th Medal of Chinese Youth" award.
Xiuxiang Liu and his sick mother lived together after his father died of an illness, but their poor life did not destroy him. In 2008, he entered NNU as he wished, and completed his studies smoothly while working and studying at the same time. After graduating from NNU, many companies gave him excellent job offers, but he refused them all, and chose to return to his hometown where education was not quite well developed. The reason for this was that he hoped to change and improve more children’s lives who are trapped by poverty like he was, so that the fire of dreams and hopes can be rekindled in their hearts.
Xiuxiang Liu once said, "At first, I thought it would be enough to change one or two people. But then I thought, I can't just change one person. As I am a class teacher, there are 50 people in a class, then I may be able to change 50 people." When he realized that he could help more people, he began to devote himself to public welfare. He has supported more than 1700 poor students one-on-one and has given more than 1000 inspirational speeches. His story of his studies has warmed and inspired many people. In August 2017, Xiuxiang Liu also brought his story to NNU, his alma mater, and gave a wonderful speech entitled "Believe in the power of struggle--dream, duty and responsibility" to the students of NNU. There is no doubt that in the future, his love and responsibility will also pass more hope and protection to more children in need.
Xiangyu Gong, a junior from the School of Sports science and Physical Education of NNU, was given the "National Excellent Youth League Member" award. She was born in April of 1997 and is from Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province. She is a 2016 Rio Olympic champion and 2019 women's Volleyball World Cup champion from the China's women's volleyball team.
Fei Shen, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and student counselor of the School of Journalism and Communication of NNU, won the "May 4th Medal of Jiangsu Youth" award. Fei Shen is dedicated and hardworking. During the past 16 years, he has devoted himself to be a college counselor and actively promoted the professionalization of counselors.
Guopeng Li, a senior who is majoring in Economics in the School of Business at NNU, was awarded the National Excellent League Member. Guopeng Li has been working hard in his studies, voluntary service and improving his general performance, improving and repaying the society in an all-round way and setting a good example for the Youth League members.
