The NNU alumni that attended the 2nd Jiangsu Development Summit & the 1st Jiangsu Entrepreneurs Convention gathered in the No.100 Building on the Suiyuan Campus the morning of May 19th, 2019. Minqiang Hu, the secretary of the NNU Committee of the CPC, President Guoxiang Chen, Vice President Jiusheng Li, and leaders from relevant departments and schools of Nanjing Normal University also attended the symposium with Jiusheng Li as the host.
On behalf of Nanjing Normal University, Minqiang Hu extended a warm welcome and gave sincere greetings to the alumni from both home and abroad attending the symposium. He also expressed great thanks to them for their care and support of NNU and their contributions to its development. He pointed out that the word "Alumni" is full of love and friendship and our alumni, the pride of NNU, represent the fruitful results of NNU’s talent cultivation. The university highly values their suggestions for the development of NNU. He expects more frequent visits of the alumni to their alma mater, NNU, and more interaction between them in order to advance mutual development and build a community with a shared future for the alumni and NNU.
In his speech, Guoxiang Chen pointed out that a university serves the society through cultivating students. The outstanding achievements of the alumni are the greatest pride and joy of the alma mater. Guoxiang Chen gave a general introduction to NNU’s recent development. First, the layout of the university has been further optimized. While optimizing the layout of its disciplines and promoting the coordinated development of disciplines such as liberal arts, science, engineering, and art, NNU has planned and adjusted the functional layout of the campus and has strived to build a campus environment expected of a high-level university. Second, NNU's core competitiveness has continued to be enhanced. The university has been selected as a co-sponsored university by the Jiangsu Government and the Ministry of Education of the PRC, designated as a national “Double First-Class” university and as a high-level university of Jiangsu Province. Third, NNU has taken the lead in the development of its basic education, strengthened research-education integration, industry-education integration and the transformation of research achievements into practice and began the construction of new liberal arts and new engineering disciplines. Guoxiang Chen noted that the achievements of NNU have been made possible with the dedicated support from our alumni. On this occasion, therefore, he extended sincere thanks to all of them on behalf of NNU and invited all NNU alumni around the world to attend the 120th anniversary of NNU.
The alumni recalled their study and life during their university years at NNU and shared their own experiences after graduation. They highlighted their desire to contribute to the development of their alma mater and gave valuable advice on discipline construction and enhancing NNU’s influence. They also noted that in the era of great changes in higher education, NNU should leverage its strength in education, build characteristics in its teacher education based on its liberal arts tradition, strengthen the applied research aspect of the discipline, combine theory with practice, apply knowledge into practice, and constantly make breakthroughs in the development of new liberal arts disciplines. Meanwhile, NNU should also advance the development of its science and engineering disciplines, actively explore new resources and make continuous investment to discipline development with the aim of building leading and first-class disciplines. NNU, with over a hundred years of history, should not only dedicate itself to nurturing talent for the development of Jiangsu Province, but also have both a keen awareness of national realities and a global vision. NNU should enhance cooperation, continue to play its model role among normal colleges and universities and make sure all these efforts will be incorporated into major national development strategies. NNU should serve the social development by means of providing a quality education and work hard to transform the traditional disciplines into new liberal arts and engineering disciplines. NNU can establish scholarships in the name of outstanding teachers to pass down the NNU spirit, promote gratitude, serve the development of the university, and build NNU into a comprehensive and research-oriented high-level university with great potential as soon as possible. In addition, more alumni associations should be set up in countries and regions where the alumni are located.
The student representative, Ruoqi Hui, said that she would take the example of all the excellent alumni present here to carry forward the spirit of patriotism, foster an all-round moral, intellectual, physical and aesthetic grounding with a hard-working spirit, and contribute to the future construction and development of Nanjing Normal University. After a free discussion period, Guoxiang Chen presented the flag to the California Branch of the North American Alumni Association of Nanjing Normal University under the witness of many North American alumni.
