The three-day International Conference on Cartographic Visualization of Big Data for Early Warning and Disaster/Crisis Management was concluded in NNU recently. This conference was sponsored by International Cartographic Association(ICA) and the School of Geography Science in NNU and organized by the Key Laboratory of Virtual Geographic Environment for the Ministry of Education, Chinese Academy of Surveying and mapping, Jiangsu Center for Collaborative Innovation in Geographical Information Resource Development and Application, Jiangsu Association for the Sciences of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System and Jiangsu Society for Geodesy Photogrammetry and Cartography.
Guoan Tang, the dean of the School of Geography Science, hosted the opening ceremony. On this conference, professor Lixin Tian, the vice president of NNU, professor Milan Konecny, (the former president of ICA), the president of the Committee on Early warning and Crisis Mangement of ICA and professor László Zentai, the secretary general of ICA delivered their speeches respectively. After the opening ceremony, professor Sálvano Briceño(the former director of UNISDR), László Zentai, members of the Committee for Integrated Research on Disaster Risk and professor Jiping Liu, the deputy dean of Chinese Academy of Surveying and mapping made reports on the conference about the contribution made by big data and geographic information on disaster risk reduction, the challenge of modern cartography and disaster-related information mining and integration of geographic space under the network environment.
During the conference, professor Milan Konecny, Dr. Christophne Lienert(the former president of the Committee on Early warning and Crisis Mangement of ICA ), the deputy director of Water Environment Management Agency Switzerland, Temenoujka Bandrova(the president of Bulgaria cartography association ), the professor of University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy Bulgaria, professor Rajib Shaw, the executive director of the International Integrated Research on Disaster Risk, professor Jing Li, the director of the Institute of Space Information and Technology, Academy of Disaster Reduction and Emergency Management Beijing Normal University, Ping Liu, the professor of Chinese Academy of Governance and Dr. Tao Bai, the president of The International Association of Emergency Managers (Asia) made reports on the integrated application of GIS in the natural disaster early warning, Web services and interactive map, the visualization of map on disaster management, the disaster prediction basing on the decision level fusion of multi-source remote sensing data, and the management of China’s disasters respectively.
In this conference, more than 60 experts and scholars from all over the world made oral presentations respectively on the geographic modeling of disaster early warning, the earth monitoring technology of risk management, real-time location & big data analyses, the management of disaster visualization, the cartographic method and technology of disaster early warning & management. During the conference, Min Chen, professor of NNU, presided over the round-table meeting in which representatives expressed their own opinions concerning the theme of the conference.
