The School of Psychology (SOP) at Nanjing Normal University (NNU) has a long history and is literally one of the birthplaces of Chinese psychology. It can be traced back to the Department of Psychology of the National Nanjing Higher Normal School in 1920, the first psychology department in China. Suchrenowned psychologists as ZhiweiLu,HeqinChen, Wei Ai, ShichengLiao, ShuPan, JuchuGao, and Zuyin Dinghave long worked here.After nearly 100 years of development, SOP has become one of the leading forces of psychology in Jiangsu province, and one of the important bases for psychological personnel training and scientific research in China withinternational influence.It ranked ninth in the third round of China Discipline Ranking (CDR) and enters level B+ of the CDR, which ranks among the top 10 in the field of psychology in China.
This school has a long history of academic research in Psychology. In 1960, NNU was among only four universitiesto set up the discipline of Psychology in the Department of Education. In 1978 and 1983, NNU was authorized to confer Master’s Degrees and Doctorates in General Psychology, respectively. SOP now has “first-level key disciplines” of Jiangsu, a Postdoctoral program of Psychology, a “first-level discipline” authorized to offer Doctorate Degrees in Psychology, a “first-level discipline” authorized to offer Master’s Degree in Psychology, Doctorate Degree in Education (shared), Master’s Degree in Education (Psychological Health Education), Master’s Degree in Applied Psychology, Jiangsu Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, Jiangsu Work Station for Graduates Majoring in Humanities and Social Sciences (Nanjing Municipal People's Procuratorate) and the Cooperative Innovation Center at the university level (Elderly Mental Health Cooperative Innovation Center). The SOP and the School of Education Science have jointly built a base for career education and development of national college students and two Jiangsu cooperative innovation centers: the Cooperative Innovation Center for Basic Education Talent-Training Modes and the Cooperative Innovation Center for Practice in Moral Goodness and Holistic Growth. In 2018, it was awarded a project funded by the Priority Academic Program Development of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions.
The school takes pride in its well-structured teaching faculty with outstanding academic achievements and preeminent and distinctive scientific research. The number of faculty and staff in the SOP totals 31, including 12 professors, 15 associate professors and 4 lecturers.Many of them have been awarded projects at all levels, including oneNational “New Century Million Talents project”, one“MOE New Century Excellent Talent project”, one receiving a State Council special allowance, three Jiangsu “333 High-Caliber Talent Training Project” recipients and four NNU “100 Leading Youth Talent” awardees. Many professors have had an important academic impact in domestic psychological circles, including one an acting as a Standing Director of the Chinese Psychological Society and the Director of the Jiangsu Psychological Society, around 10 take important positions like deputy directors, vice presidents and standing directors in national and provincial academic organizations.
The SOP adheres to the principle of Welfare and Education, promoting educational reform and improving the quality of talent cultivation. During the "12th Five-Year" period, the SOP had two National Excellent Resources Sharing Courses approved, one National “12th Five-Year” Planned Textbook, and one MOE Brand Course Taught in English for studying in China. The major of Applied Psychology was assessed as a Jiangsu Brand Major and one of Jiangsu’s “12th Five-Year” Feature Specialties for Undergraduate Students.The SOP has been rewarded with over 80 awards at or above the provincial level in all kinds of activities like the Seventh “Challenge Cup” Business-Planning Competition, National English Competition for College Students, Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling, National Speech Competition for College Students, Jiangsu Science Competition for Undergraduates In Liberal Arts, etc. Six baccalaureate dissertations were awarded as Jiangsu Outstanding Baccalaureate Dissertations. The employment rate of graduates has remained at 100% for years.
The research of psychology history and theoretical psychology has always maintained a leading position in China. Cognitive neuroscience, social and economic, development and education, clinical and consulting, etc. are also highly influential in China. Ever since the “12th Five-Year” period, SOP has published more than 400 papers in SCI, SSCI CSSCI, and CSCD journals, over 30 monographs and over 20 translations and textbooks. Over 40 provincial, ministerial or national research projectshave been undertaken amounting to more than 10 million yuan, 13 of which also received provincial and ministerial achievement awards (including three first prizes, one second prize, and seven third prizes).
5.International Exchange and Cooperation
The SOPattaches great importance to international academic exchange and cooperation and adheres to an international development strategy. In recent years, the SOP has sent nine teachers to overseas high-level universities for 1-year academic exchanges, and over 30 teachers for important international conferences such as the International Congress of Psychology, International Conference for Chinese Psychologists, Asia Pacific Network for Moral Education (APNME), etc. The SOP has invited Prof. Michael Tanenhaus, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) and a professor of Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Rochester, as an NNU Chair Professor. The SOP also co-organizes the Asia Education Leadership Course (AELC), together with Tohoku University, Korea University, Taiwan Normal University and National Chengchi University, and jointly educates master’s students in Applied Psychology with Pace University.
More than 400 lectures or other services forcivil servant training, business planning and industry standards, including five consultation reports for governments at all levels, such as solving countermeasures for adolescent risk behaviors and the "three assistance system for the elderly".More than ten international conferences, like the 16th National Academic Congress of Psychology and the 8th China International Conference on Eye Movements (CICEM) were held at NNU. Over 10 company funded projects of various types of cooperation, with an amount of over 8 million yuan, were completed.
