1. Discipline Basis
The School of Music at Nanjing Normal University (NNU) offers “first-level discipline” academic doctoral programs and academic master’s degree programs and has set up a “first-level discipline” post-doctoral program, forming a complete cultivation system from undergraduate education to post-doctoral studies.Music is a national “211 Project” key discipline, a Jiangsu Provincial “9th Five-Year Plan”, “10th Five-Year Plan” and “13th Five-Year Plan” key discipline, Jiangsu Provincial brand major and Jiangsu Provincial preponderant discipline. The school, which is one of the National Sports and Art Teacher Training Bases, has set up a Research Center for Music Education Development in China’s Normal Universities, Micro-lectures Experiment Center for Music Education in China’s Normal Universities and a Research Center for Chinese Music History.
2. Team Building
There are 79 teaching and administrative staff in the School of Music, including 11 professors, 33 associate professors, 4 doctoral supervisors, 54 master students’ supervisors, and 78 of the teaching staff have obtained doctoral or master’s degrees. The School of Music attaches importance to theapplied arts of teachers and students. Staff have won many prizes in music competitions at home and abroad, such as Golden Bell Awards, CCTV Young Singers Grand Prix, National Art Song Competition organized by the Ministry of Culture, the National Nie Er and Xian Xinghai Vocal Competition and the National Musical Instrument Competition. Students ranked among the best in previous competitions like the Pearl River Competition for students majoring in music education, and they have achieved good scoresin their general performance and in individual events.
3. Talent Cultivation
The School of Music at NNU can be traced back to the music courses offeredat Sanjiang Normal College in 1902, is one of the birthplaces of modern and contemporary music education in China and an important place of music education in normal universities. Up until now, among music education leaders in primary and secondary schools, music teaching and research divisions, teachers of colleges and universities in Jiangsu Province, about 80% graduated from NNU and 98% of special-grade music teachers are NNU graduates. The school takes music and dance education as the fundamental goal of development, aiming at cultivating high-level teaching talent with an international vision, creative thinking, ability to teach and research in colleges and universities or scientific research institutes as well as fostering talentin Chinese music history and cultural management. The education system of the school combines music education with Chinese music history.
4. Scientific Research
Teachers and students of the School of Music persist in scientific research and innovation. The teaching staff have undertaken over 60 important scientific research projects including projects funded by the National Social Science Fund, National Arts and Sciences, University Humanities and Social Science Fund of Ministry of Education, and published 32 monographs and translations, 61 textbooks and more than 600 academic papers.
5. International Exchange and Cooperation
As one of the first batch of universities offering education for foreign students, NNU’s School of Music provides courses on Chinese music culture theory and various kinds ofChinese traditional musical instruments. The school attaches great importance to academic communication with other countries and has established cooperation with music departments of countries like the United States, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, Austria, Russia, Ukraine and Norway.
6. Social Service
Withadvantagesin history and practice, the staff of NNU’s School of Music have been responsible for the job of hosting Jiangsu Provincial unified examinations for 18 years and have put forward reports for decision making regarding examination standards. In addition, the school has organized the activity “Classic Art in Campus” with themes such as “High-spirited Youth” and “Inherit Human Culture and Arts” for many years, which is hosted by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Finance, China. The activity, which has been organized in Nanjing, Yangzhou, Changzhou and other cities’ colleges and universities, provides a platform for teachers and students of the School of Music toshare their wonderful music and dance performances with the community.
