Mathematics

1.Discipline Basis
Founded in 1952, the School of Mathematical Sciences at Nanjing Normal University has a long tradition of excellent teaching and a supportive environment for students is paired with cutting-edge research across a broad spectrum of mathematics and its applications. This school began to enroll postgraduate students in 1982.Threemaster’s programs—pure mathematics, computational mathematics and mathematics pedagogy, were offered starting in 1986, and two doctorate’s programs in pure mathematicsand mathematicspedagogy anda master’s program in operational research and control theorystarting in 1998. It set uppostdoctoral program in mathematics in 2001 and became an accredited institution conferring Doctoral Degreesas a “first-level discipline” in mathematics.Computational mathematics and pure mathematics became key disciplines of Jiangsu Province in 1985 and 1988 respectively. This school was also awarded a national “211” key subject construction project Phase I, Phase II, PhaseIII and Phase II of a Project Funded by the Priority Academic Program Development of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions. This school entered level B+ (10—20%) of the China Discipline Ranking (CDR)in 2017 and almost ranked 1% (98.33%) in Essential Science Indicators (ESI) by July, 2018.
2.Team Building
The school is consisted of 75 full faculty members, more than 95% of whom have PhD degrees. There are some distinguished individuals in both research and teaching, for example, one is included in “Young Scholar Thousand Talent Plan”, two young faculty were awarded the “Million Talent Plan”, one was conferred the title of CNSF Distinguished Young Scholars, one received the project of “Jiangsu Province 333 Talent Training” and three were employed as distinguished professors of Jiangsu Province. As for international development, our faculty has focused on a couple of core areas and have built four to five research teams.
3.Talent Cultivation
The School of Mathematical Sciences has established a successful educational system to train undergraduate students all the way to post-doctoral studies. This way of cultivation has led many faculty members to be recognized for their achievements, including one second prize State-Level Teaching Award, one first prize Jiangsu Province-level Teaching Achievement Award, three Meritorious Winners and 14 Honorable Mentions in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM), two first prizes and five second prizes in Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling(CUMCM), and one first prize and three second prizes in a National Post-Graduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling. Besides that, the school has signed agreements with department of mathematics with China University of Sciences and Technologies (USTC) and Nanjing University to co-train undergraduate students. Also, joint agreements have been signed with North Carolina State University (NCSU) and the University of Southampton to co-train postgraduate students.
4.Scientific Research
The school aims to create a relaxed study and research environment to encourage innovation, exploration, and academic freedom. The school is well recognized in several research areas including number theory, homological algebra, numerical solution of differential equations, analysis of partial differential equations and fluid mechanics, locale theory, graph theory, and several other fields.
During the past five years, the faculty have published 78 research papers inTOP journals and 275 SCI papers. In addition, there are many national and provincial research awards and honors, such astwokey programs funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China,one major programfunded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, two first prize ofthe Science Research Famous Achievement Award in Higher Institution, one for Social Science the other for Natural Science, and two second prizes ofthe Science and Technology Award of Jiangsu Province.
5.International Exchange and Cooperation
The discipline of mathematics continues to strengthen and deepen cooperation and exchanges with internationally renowned universities or research institutions to further enhance the level of scientific research.The school has held and the faculty has attended high-level international conferences to follow the frontier of international discipline development.The school will further promote the construction of the benchmarking college with the Department of Mathematics of North Carolina State University, improve the joint training of graduate students with the University of Southampton, and select a group of outstanding graduate students to study at overseas universities. Meanwhile, the school will further increase the amount of international students studying at NNU.The school, along with Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) NumericalAlgebra, co-founded Control and Optimization (NACO) with NNU Professor Yongzhong Song and Professor KokLay Teo from Curtin University.The magazine will continue to adhere to the principle of putting quality first to further enhanceits academic influence at home and abroad.
6.Social Service
The Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratory for Numerical Simulation of Large Scale Complex Systems with interdisciplinary strength contributes to the scientific development in Jiangsu Province.Jiangsu Provincial Spatial Big Data Engineering Laboratorybenefits the method of industrialization in this regard.The advantages of mathematics and statistics should be brought into play to provide theoretical models and a decision-making basis for Taihu lake management and the spread and control of local infectious diseases in Jiangsu province, and to establish investment models and risk prevention models for the financial and insurance sectors. The analysis of a regional carbon cycle and the law of its evolution provides valuable solutions for the study of urban carbon cycle.By using optimal control theory, a new carbon social cost modelcan be constructed to analyze the influencing factors ofsocial cost of carbon under different scenarios.
