Material Science and Technology (A Project Funded by the Priority Academic Program Development of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions (PAPD) in Nanjing Normal University)
(1) Discipline foundation
The priority academic program of Material Science and Technology, Nanjing Normal University, one of the Second Priority Academic Program Development of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions (PAPD) approved by Jiangsu provincial government, is mainly supported by two first-level disciplines of Chemistry and Electronic Science and Technology. This priority academic program is based on a first-level discipline doctoral degree program of chemistry and a second-level discipline doctoral degree program of physical electronics, 3 Master degree programs of engineering and 2 post-doctoral research stations. For research program, there are 10 national or provincial Key Labs or Research Centers within this program, including National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center of Biomedical Functional Materials, Jiangsu Collaborative Innovation Center of Biomedical Functional Materials, Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Biomedical Materials, Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Photoelectric Technology, Jiangsu Key Laboratory of New Power Battery, Jiangsu Engineering Research Center of Biomedical Functional Materials, Jiangsu Extraction and separation Engineering and Technology Research Center, Jiangsu Province industrial waste solvent regeneration and application engineering technology research center, Jiangsu New Flame Retardant Materials Engineering and Technology Research Center, Jiangsu Testing Service Center of Biomedical Functional Materials. For teaching program, there are 3 provincial Teaching Centers for the program of material science and technology: Jiangsu Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Chemistry, Jiangsu Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Electronic Information and Jiangsu Education Practice Center of Chemical Engineering and Materials. According to the ESI evaluation system of the quantity and quality of publications, our discipline of chemistry has been consistently ranked top 1% among the global scientific research institutions.
(2) Construction of Research Team
The priority academic program of material science and technology has set up five scientific research and innovation teams with main directions including biomedical functional materials, inorganic functional materials, advanced energy materials, photoelectric, magneto electric functional materials and devices and green synthetic materials and optimum. Among our distinguished faculties and staffs, 1 professor is selected by “National 1000 plan” oversea expert program, 1 professor is the Winner of “the National Science Foundation of China for Outstanding Young Researcher”, 4 professors are selected by “The Ministry of Education program for new century excellent talents”, 1 professor is titled as “Double talent in Jiangsu Province”, 5 distinguished professors of Jiangsu Province and 2 teams award for “ Scientific and Technological Innovation Team of Jiangsu Province” and “Double Talent Team of Jiangsu Province”. There are 100 members for the 5 teams and 38 of them are professors. In recent years, we have established a long-term cooperation and maintained a good relationship with universities from U.S., Spain, Germany, South Korea and Singapore. We have recruited a lot of talented researchers from the international top ranking universities and research institutions including Harvard University, Texas A&M University, Universidad de Puerto Rico, Ludwig Maximilians University, University of Edinburgh, Hiroshima University, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Nanyang Technological University, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Peking University, etc. Currently, 90% of our team members have doctoral degree.
(3) Talents cultivation
Discipline of material science and technology has full cultivation program from undergraduates to postgraduates. Within the last three years, 1 PhD thesis, 3 master thesis and 2 bachelor thesis awarded excellent provincial thesis, and 2 teams awarded excellent guardian award. The disciplines were actively exploring the undergraduate and postgraduate cultivation system via early guardians and team cultivation. Geared to the needs of academic frontiers, disciplines developed collaborative system for excellent talent cultivation, and sat training for top creative talents with abilities to carry out important research projects. “Early direction – long term cultivation – regular evaluation, develop basic quality cultivation system in undergraduate chemistry class” won the second class award of teaching achievement of Jiangsu Province. Discipline of Chemistry is a key major for university and college of Jiangsu Province. In order to adapt to social development and cultivate professional talents with international vision, disciplines have consulted professional training plans from top ranking universities domestically and internationally, reformed talents training mode, adjusted the curriculum and teaching methods, paid attention to the cultivation of innovative thinking and practical abilities, utilized teaching materials from top universities. Presently, a total English teaching program for the master degree graduates of analytical chemistry, is supported by the priority academic program of material science and technology. The disciplines have been carrying out high level academic visitor exchanging program and research collaborations with international top ranking universities. Up to now, 6 graduates (3 Ph. D students and 3 master students), 5 undergraduates and 11 academic staffs have been to well-known oversea universities and research institutions to perform academic visiting and collaboration research programs.
(4) Scientific research and social contributions
The research and development area of the priority academic program of material science and technology is mainly focus on biomedical materials, design and controlled synthesis of photosensitive and chemotherapy drugs, intelligent medicine-carrier nano materials, novel nonmaterial, functional coordination compounds of a new generation of catalyst based on met materials photonic devices, as well as the new synthetic method of atom economical materials. In the past five years, the discipline of material science and technology have been supported by 2 National “863” Sub Projects, 1 Key Project of National Natural Science Fundation, 70 National Natural Science Fundation (including the youth program) and 28 the provincial projects, with a total of RMB 66.8 million yuan research fundings and the average research funding per staff is about RMB 784,000; over 90 developing cooperation projects with a total of RMB 30 million yuan funding and the average developing funding per staff is about RMB 329,000. There were more than 500 SCI papers published on international journals, including PNAS, J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Adv. Mater., Acc. Chem. Res., ACS Nano and other well-known scientific journals. Amongst them, 266 papers were published with SCI impact factor more than 3.0, and the highest citation for a single paper reached 274 times and the average citation per paper is about 8.3 times. We have published nearly 20 monographs and textbooks and 112 invention patents have been authorized. we have awarded 3 first class prizes, 3 second class prizes and 2 third class prizes, including Award for outstanding achievements in scientific research in colleges and universities of Ministry of Education, (science and technology); Awards of China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association (science and technology); Award for Science and Technology Progress of Jiangsu Province . The school has hosted five international and national academic conferences, including “The Third China-Europe Symposium of regenerative medicine and biomaterials” and “The 7th International Symposium on Nano Science and New Energy Materials”.
