1. Discipline Basis
The School of Journalism and Communication at Nanjing Normal University (NNU) was established in 1964. It is rated as “B+” in the fourth round of China Discipline Ranking (CDR) and included in the top 10%-20% nationwide. The school now offers doctoral degree programs and master’s degree programs in “first-level discipline” Journalism and Communication and a professional track master’s degree program in Journalism and Communication. In 1996, the master’s degree program of Journalism at NNU was set up. In 2006, this school became the first one, among all national normal universities, to have a doctoral program of Journalism. In 2017, the school built the first doctoral degree programs of a“first-level discipline” Journalism and Communication in Jiangsu Province. Journalism was selected as a featured major in the first national assessment. Journalism and Communication at NNU has been a key discipline of Jiangsu Province starting from the year 2001. In 2007, the Publicity Department of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China and NNU began to jointly develop the discipline.
2. Team Building
The school currently has 65 teaching and administrative staff, including 45 full-time teachers, 14 professors (researchers), 20 associate professors, 8 Ph.D. supervisors and 27 master’s student supervisors. It has set up key research institutions at NNU like the Mass Media and Social Development Research Center, Institute for Public Opinion and Social Governance and the Research Center for News of the Republic of China and academic institutes including Media and Rule of Law Research Institute, Photography Industry and Image Communication Research Institute, Research Institute of Modern Advertising, Media Development and Crisis Management Research Institute, Research Institute of Publishing Communication and Research Institute of New Media. The school has assembled a group of talented individuals with great team spirit.
3. Talent Cultivation
The school of Journalism and Communication has many choices of majors. It includes several departments, such as the Department of Journalism, Radio and television, advertising, photography, network and new media systems and so on. The school offers 1 academic master’s degree program in Journalism and Communication, 3 academic master’s programs in Journalism, Communication and Video and Television Art, 2 professional master’s programs in Radio and Television, a doctoral degree program in Journalism and Communication (including 4 academic fields: Journalism, Communication, New Media and Social Governance and Laws of Journalism and Communication). The School of Journalism and Communication has cultivated over 6000 students to serve society. Currently, more than 1100 students have enrolled in the School of Journalism and Communication, about 300 of whom are master’s students and over 20 of whom are doctoral students.
4. Scientific Research
The department formed its own defining academic characteristics especially in 4 fields including the History of Journalism, Communication and Society, Laws of Journalism and Communication and New Media and Social Governance. Since the "Twelfth Five Year Plan", the teaching staff have won 1 Teaching Achievement Prize of Jiangsu Province, Awards for Outstanding Achievements in the Philosophy and Social Sciences in Jiangsu Province, and have been awarded 12 projects supported by the National Social Science Fund of China including 1 major project and 4 key projects as well as 1 major project supported by the Jiangsu Provincial Social Science Fund. The teaching staff have published books concerning public opinion and social governance, the history of journalism and communication, new era of film and television communication, contemporary mass media and society, information and social development, contemporary media practice, the art of film and television communication and the art of photography.
5. International Exchange and Cooperation
The school has established cooperative relations with the University of Wisconsin, Stirling University in England, University of Salzburg in Austria, Shih Hsin University in Taiwan, Hong Kong Baptist University, City University of Hong Kong and other colleges and universities at home and abroad. Team members of the school have attended many conferences and made academic reports abroad, and many scholars from America, England and other countries have visited NNU for academic communication and exchange with faculty members. Every year, postgraduate students have gone to study at the above-mentioned colleges and universities to have academic communication or further study, while international students have also come to NNU to study.
The school has set up institutions including the Jiangsu News Talent Training Center and the Jiangsu Party Committee and Government News Spokesman Training Base. It has cultivated new talent to serve government and enterprises, for instance, Xinhua News Agency Jiangsu Bureau, Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation, Nanjing Daily, Jiangsu Sina, Jiangsu Phoenix Publishing&Media Group and Xinhua Daily Media Group. In recent years, the teaching staff and students of the school have actively gotten involved a variety of activities like publicizing the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games and brands of Rugao City’s agricultural products. It set up the editorial department of Jiangsu Government Affairs and Public Opinion (a periodical appearing once every ten days) to provide informationconcerning public opinion and suggestions for the Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government and the Publicity Department of Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China.
