Foreign Languages and Literature (A Project Funded by the Priority Academic Program Development of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions (PAPD) in Nanjing Normal University)
(1) Discipline Basis
Foreign languages and literature discipline(FLLD)of Nanjing Normal University, at present, offers doctoral and master degree programs(first-tier discipline) under the category of foreign languages and literature, in addition to a post-doctoral research station conducting studies in this field. FLLD also offers five doctoral degree programs and seven master degree programs(both second tier discipline), and confers master degrees in English Teaching and Interpretation ＆Translation as well as BA degrees for eight foreign languages , namely English, Russian, Japanese, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Korean. FLLD ranked No.7 in a nationwide assessment (Year 2014) conducted by the Higher Education Evaluation Center of the Ministry of Education. In 2010, FLLD was among the first batch enrolled in "the project to enhance academic superiority" in Jiangsu Province and was enrolled in again in 2014. The program of English language and literature, which was selected into the first group of key studies in 1990 by the Education Commission of Jiangsu Province, has stayed on the list of key studies of Jiangsu Province since 1994. FLLD possesses one provincial innovation team of cognitive studies of signs and two provincial key research bases- the translation and research center of Jiangsu literature and the center for the dynamic research of international laws for Jiangsu Province.
(2) Team Construction
FLLD focuses on researches in five areas- cultural studies of British and American literature, studies of western linguistics, studies of foreign semiotic, studies in second language acquisition and neuro-mechanism of attrition and applied linguistics. FLLD also has gained distinguishing features and established superiority in such aspects as international cultural semiotics studies, interdisciplinary study of American civilization and scientific and analytic studies of neuro-cognitive linguistics. As of May, 1, 2014, FLLD has a staff of 201, including 28 professors, 53 associate professors. 63 faculty members have held Ph.D degrees. They have got their Ph.D degrees from famous domestic and foreign universities. Professor Qian Mansu got her degree from Harvard University. Professor Yang Haocheng finished his post-doctoral research in Harvard. Professor Lin Minjie and Associate Professor Liu Can got their degrees from famous Japanese universities. Others got their degrees from famous domestic universities like Peking University, Peking University of Foreign Languages, Nanking University, Shanghai University of Foreign Languages. The dean of FLLD , Professor Zhangjie, is the executive committee member and the Finance Director of International Semiotic Studies Association. Professor Wang Yongxiang, is the executive committee member of International Semiotic Studies Association. Professor Xinbin is the provincial prestigious teacher.
(3) Talent Cultivation
Departments and affiliated Institutes under FLLD include: Department of English, Russian, French, Asian Languages, European Languages, Translation, Department of Graduate Teaching, Department of Non-Major English Teaching, French Training Center (Nanjing), Research Institutes of Foreign Languages and Cultures, Research Institutes of International Semiotics, Research Institutes of Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Research Institutes of American Civilization, Research Center of Canadian Cultures, Research Center of Australian Culture, Research Center of Italian Culture, Research Center of French Culture and the Research Center of English Teaching in Elementary and Secondary Schools. In 2005, the English Undergraduate Program was designated the only “quality major” in Jiangsu Provincial Universities. In the following year, out of a nationwide assessment conducted by the national English Teaching and Undergraduate Program Evaluation Team under MOE (Ministry of Education), the result was “Excellent”. The Russian Undergraduate Program was named as “Featured Specialty of Jiangsu Province” in 2010. All the courses in English language and literature discipline are taught in English. FLLD has up till now sent 100 persons and time to USA, BK, Australia, Canada, Russia, Japan, and France to either further their studies or give lectures.
(4) Scientific Research and Social Service
From 2010 to 2015, FLLD has altogether published 41 academic books, 26 translated books. It has issued 28 papers in AHCI, SSCI and SCI journals. 12 projects funded by National Natural Science Foundation and by National Social Science Foundation, 29 projects funded by the provincial and by MOE have been finished or are being carried out. In 2014, Professor Zhang Hui’s “Neuro-cognitive mechanism of syntactic processing of Chinese English learners” was funded as key project by NSSF and in 2015, Professor Zhang Jie’s “Orthodox and Russian Literature” was funded as the very important project by NSSF. FLLD has achieved 25 provincial and ministerial rewards for researches. Professor Ni Chuan bin’s “the influencing factors of foreign language attrition” achieved 2nd rank reward from MOE for social sciences contribution in 2015. FLLD has achieved 11 1st rank and 2nd rank rewards of and above provincial and ministerial level. “The Innovation and Practice of Internationalized Training System for Foreign Language Major Postgraduates” program led by Professor Zhang Jie was awarded 2nd rank reward for national Teaching Achievements. FLLD has 1 national best quality course and 1 provincial best quality course. FLLD has carried out extensive and academic exchange programs with its counterparts and research institutes both at home and abroad. In recent years, it has launched several research projects based on international collaboration, and organized and sponsored 15 international symposiums. FLLD also successfully hosted 11th world Congress of Semiotics in 2012. Over the years, more than scores of foreign experts have been invited to give lectures and lessons here, including Professor Clause Panther- Ex-President of the International Cognitive Linguistic Association and Professor at Hamburg University.
