Foreign Languages and Cultures

1. Discipline Basis
The School of Foreign Languages and Cultures at Nanjing Normal University (NNU) has a long history, consisting of 5 departments and 10 research centers. In 2012, it ranked 7th in the evaluation of “first-level disciplines” organized by the China Academic Degrees & Graduate Education Development Center (CDGDC), the Ministry of Education. In the fourth round of discipline ranking in the year of 2016, it was rated as grade-A in the evaluation of overall levels of disciplines. It was also successively granted the project funded by the Priority Academic Program Development of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions in 2010, 2013 and 2018.

2. Team Building
The school has 115 full-time faculty, including 36 full professors and 39 associate professors. Among these faculty members, 1 works as a Jiangsu Provincial Distinguished Professor, 6 have been awarded a “333 Project” of Jiangsu Province, 2 are outstanding young faculty that have been awarded the Qing Lan Project of Jiangsu Province, 5 work as core members among young and middle-aged faculty as well as young leading talent of NNU, and 20 are doctoral supervisors and 63 are master student supervisors.

3. Talent Cultivation
English Language at NNU was officially named as the only foreign language “high-quality major” in Jiangsu Province in 2005 and was rated as the preponderant discipline during the Undergraduate Teaching Assessment of English Majors conducted by the Ministry of Education in 2006. Russian Language was chosen as the “featured major” of Jiangsu Province in 2010. The School of Foreign Languages and Cultures offers doctoral degree programs and master’s degree programs recognized as “first-level disciplines”, including 6 doctoral degree programs and 7 master’s degree programs recognized as “second-level disciplines”, including 2 career track master's degree programs. In recent years, the teaching staff has won 2 provincial Teaching Achievement Prizes, 1 national Teaching Achievement Prize and several awards in national teaching competitions. 8 have been awarded the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertations and Master’s Theses.

4. Scientific Research
In recent years, the faculty in the school have published 27 monographs, 23 textbooks and 456 papers, 38 of which are included in AHCI, SSCI and SCI. The teaching staff has won 3 first-class prizes of Jiangsu Provincial Philosophy and Social Science awards, 1 National Education and teaching award and 2 provincial education and teaching awards. Theschool has set up a Social Science and Innovation University Team of Jiangsu Province (rated as Excellent 2016) and a Jiangsu Provincial Key Research Center. The school is now responsible for 2 major projects and 3 key projects from the National Planning Office of Philosophy and Social Science. Members of the faculty have publicly released 3 international academic publications, and one titled, Chinese Semiotics Studies, is included in ESCI and SCOPUS.

5. International Exchange and Cooperation
The school has long attached great importance to international exchange and cooperation. In recent years, the average annual number of international students studying in the school is 50 (including short-term students and degree seeking students), and 20% of the Chinese students studying in the school go abroad to pursue study in high-level universities every year. There are 30 coursestaught in English, including courses in 2 doctoral programs. The school has actively organized many high-level academic exchange activities. It has also launched 6 cooperative projects regarding talent cultivation and scientific research with first-class or high-level universities world-wide, and hosted more than 10 international conferences.

6. Social Service
Through the Jiangsu Provincial Research Center of International Rule of Law, the school provides foreign language services of overseas projects for domestic enterprises and institutions. It also offers translation services to publicize Chinese culture internationally via the Jiangsu Provincial Literary Translation and Research Center, which was jointly set up by Publicity Department of Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China. The Center for Multi-language Service of NNU provides domestic enterprises and institutions with technical support concerning foreign language training and international language tests.
