Fine Arts

1. Discipline Basis
The School of Fine Arts at Nanjing Normal University (NNU) has a long history of 116 years and many academic achievements, and its origin can be traced back to the year of 1902 with the establishment of the Department of Drawing and Handicraft at Liangjiang Normal College. The School of Fine Arts insists on the idea of “unique and perfect”, relies on profound tradition and great resources, and follows an objective of developing principles of higher education and fine arts in China. The school makes talent cultivation, art creation and scientific research its priorities, aiming at fostering creative talent in the fine arts and developing it into one of the top schools among colleges and universities at the same level. Its academic mechanism combines practice with theory infine arts. The school started to offer master’s degree programs in 1980, doctoral degree programs of “second-level disciplines” in 2000 and doctoral degree programs of “first-level disciplines” in 2011. In 2005, the school was one of the first ones to offer degree programs for a Master of Fine Arts (MFA). In 2010, it was approved to be one of the three experimental units for comprehensive reform of art major education by the Ministry of Education, China. Fine Arts was chosen as a key discipline of Jiangsu Province in 2012 and a preponderant discipline of Jiangsu Province in 2014. In the fourth round of the China Discipline Ranking(CDR), it was rated as Grade-A and ranked fifth. Now, the school has a complete education system with a Fine Arts postdoctoral program, master’s degree programs and doctoral degree programs.
2. Team Building
The school has a team of excellent teaching talentbalanced in ages and professional titles.There are 43 full-time teachers, including 9 doctoral supervisors, 31 postgraduate supervisors, 16 professors, 17 associate professors. One faculty has been honorably chosen as a member of the Discipline Assessment Groups of the Academic Degree Commission of the State Council, 2 are members of the National Art Education Graduate Students Steering Committee, 1 is a member of the Fine Arts Higher Education Advisory Board under the Ministry of Education, 2awardees of the 333 Cross-century Academic Leader Training Project, 1 Master Teacher of Jiangsu Province and 1 school-level Faculty and 1 winner of a “May 1st Labor Medal” in Jiangsu Province. In order to strengthen the construction of the faculty team, build a scientific research team in line with the goal of first-class international disciplines and further optimize the development of the team’s structure, especially the improvement of the balance of young and experienced teachers, the school attaches great importance to motivate faculty and improve the research environment for the development of young and middle-aged artists and teachers. They are encouragedto visit and study at first-class art colleges annually at home and abroad to improve the academic level of the young teachers and broaden their research horizons. In the meantime, it is essential to ensure the organization and management of the faculty, arrange the use of training funds, and enhance the sense of recognition and enthusiasm of the faculty towards scientific research.
3. Talent Cultivation
With the traditional advantages and the pursuit of international school management, the school of Fine Arts offers “first-level discipline” doctoral degree programs and has a postdoctoral research program, forming a complete art education system for undergraduates, graduate students, doctors and post-doctoral fellows to cultivate high-level talent. More than 200 undergraduate and graduate students enroll in the school annually, majoring in Chinese painting, oil painting, watercolor painting, calligraphy, sculpture, art history, art management and art education. In the respect of talent cultivation, the school focuses on fostering the creative artistic abilities of students, practice and theory teaching and various means of examinations for every semester. Because of the favorable academic environment, many graduates have become excellent teachers in middle schools and universities and renowned artists at home and abroad. In recent years, the teaching staff have won 3 teaching achievement prizes above the provincial level and received recognition from education and art circles.
4. Scientific Research
The scientific research ability of the school ranks at the top among the same level of universities nationwide. Currently, the faculty of the school have undertaken projects, including 5 supported by the National Social Science Foundation, 6 by the National Endowment for the Arts, 51 at provincial or higher levels, 11 by the Provincial Endowment for the Arts and 14 at the departmental level. 17 works by the teachers have been chosen to be showcased in the National Fine Arts Exhibition, and 4 teachers have won awards for their works. In recent years, 4 works have been collected by the National Art Museum of China, 3 by the National Museum of China and 1 by the Great Hall of the People. The teaching staff have published 56 high-level works, including 43 monographs, 10 textbooks, 99 CSSCI papers, and won 70 art creation prizes at the international, national and provincial levels and 3second prizesfor scientific research at the provincial level.
5. International Exchange and Cooperation
The school adheres to an international school running concept and academic vision, international cooperation, exploration of inherent law concerning fine arts higher educationopen to the outsideworld. It has set up a cooperative master’s degree program with Birmingham City University, Plymouth College of Art and Design, Auburn University and the University of Art and Design Offenbach (HfG), and established cooperative education programs with Moscow State Pedagogical University and Rome University of Fine Arts for postgraduate students to study abroad and have academic communication.
6. Social Service
The school of Fine Arts will continue to contribute to the construction of national art and Jiangsu’s role as a strong province in culture by making full use of its resources. Through social service, the school will maintain an international curation vision and high-level curation conceptand build a platform to show fine arts with an international influence. The school plays an important role in the projects of “a think tank construction for “Strong Province in Art”, art research and education journal, “Xu Beihong Lecture Series” academic platform construction, advocating traditional art to foreign countries, the transformation of artistic design works and events like “Classic Art on Campus”. These events are organized by the school to contribute to art development and communication in not only Nanjing but Jiangsu Province.
