1. Discipline Basis
Chinese Language and Literatureat Nanjing Normal University is a time-honored discipline.The faculty of the school excel at academic research and educating students, and many of the teaching staff are scholars who enjoy high international reputations, such as Guizhang Tang, Wang Sun, Fu Xu, and Diaogong Wu. It is among the “first-level national key disciplines”, the Class A disciplines of the Priority Academic Program Development of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions,and was evaluated as grade A- in the fourthChina University Subject Rankings in 2017.
2. Team Building
Chinese Language and Literature has an excellent national-level team of teaching faculty and an elite innovation team in Philosophy and Social Sciences of all Jiangsu higher education institutions. We have a distinguished professor-a Yangtze Scholar of the Ministry of Education, a leading rolein the“Ten Thousand Plan”, a candidate of “New Century National Talent Project”, a cultural celebrity and a“Four Batches” talent, and two national top teachers. Also in the department are, Prof. Zhenzhen Zhong who is the chairman of the Chinese Rhyme Society, Prof. Shengqun Zhao who isthe chairman of the Chinese Historic Bibliography Study Society, Keqian Xu vice president of the International Society for Universal Dialogue (ISUD), and finally Wentao Gu who is the associate editor of the international authoritative periodical Phonetica.
3. Talent Cultivation
With the discipline of Chinese Language and Literature, both a national distinctive major and a provincial brand major of Jiangsu Province, the school iscommitted to reforming education and innovating with the aim of cultivating top-notch students with creativity. Within the last 5 years, we have launched another two national-level quality online courses, a national-level quality video course and two provincial level courses with open enrollment, and added six nationally planned textbooks into our education program. We also have had a doctoral dissertation ranked as a “National Hundred Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation” and teachers awarded with the first prize of the Jiangsu Teaching Achievement award.
4. Scientific Research
With deep-rooted academic strength and distinctive research characteristics, this school has attained great achievements in the study of Medieval–Ancient Chinese,folk songs and folk and classic literature, the Records of the Grand Historian, poetry and ci in the Tang and Song Dynasties, Confucian classics, Chinese contemporary literature and culture, and the comparison of Chinese and Russian literature. In the recent 5 years, we have been awarded funding 10 separate times from National Social Science Key and Major Projects of China, a first prize and a second prize in the Excellent Achievements of Scientific Research (liberal and social sciences) in Higher Education Institutions launched by the Ministry of Education, four first prizes and 9 second prizes of Excellent Achievements in Philosophy and SocialSciences Research in Jiangsu Province. What’s more, three academic books are included in the “National Philosophy and Social Sciences Achievements Library”.
5. International Exchange and Cooperation
The discipline attaches great importance to international exchange and cooperation, having launched more than ten international seminars, invited a handful of professors from other countries such as Fujii Shozo, Moting Wu, Haoming Liu, guest professors such as Ozawa Kenji, as well as honorable professorsShiyuan Wang, Hiroya Fujisaki and Klaus J. Kohler to deliver lectures. Moreover, the school also enrolls undergraduate students and graduate students from HK, Taiwan and other countries, and collaborates with universities and institutions abroad to strengthen scientific cooperation, student cultivation, the further education of its teachers and cultural exchange. All these activities combinedhave effectively improve the level of ourdiscipline.
6. Social Service
With three major provincial research bases and the Research Institute of Chinese Ancient Civilization of NNU and guided by the construction principle of “fearing nothing”, the schoolhas devoted itself to transforming its academic achievements part of the government cultural directive by, actively participating in the construction of cultural think tanks and spreading the essence of traditional Chinese culture among the masses on the basis of high-level research. Positive feedback has been received from society through the advocacy of scholars like Zhenzhen Zhong and Bo Li because of their influence in social service and cultural broadcasting. Many professors contribute largely to the construction of the culture in Jiangsu by taking part in the project “Arrangement and Research of the Cultural History of Jiangsu Province”
