Axel H.E. Müller obtained his Ph.D. in 1977 from the University of Mainz. He was professor of Macromolecular Chemistry at the University of Bayreuth from 1999 to 2012. In October 2012 he moved back to Mainz University to continue research as a Fellow of the Gutenberg Research College.

His research interest focuses on the design of complex polymer and hybrid structures by controlled/living polymerization techniques and on self-organized nanostructures and obtained from them in bulk and solution.

He is also Senior Editor of the journal Polymer. Awards include the IUPAC MACRO Distinguished Polymer Scientist Award (2004) and the Hermann Staudinger Prize of the German Chemical Society (2012). In 2012, he received the Hermann Staudinger Prize from the Society of German Chemists.
