2. Program Duration and Credit

  • Three years generally, the maximum school years are not longer than 5 years (including the extension time).
  • 30 credits of courses in total, at least 19 credits of academic courses.

3. Core Courses and Introduction

Historical Philology Seminar
Historical Philology is one of the basic degree courses for the Master Degree Candidate of World History to study. It is very important that they should learn this course. By it, they could well know the historical value documents and get hold of elementary knowledge, and build the World History studies preliminary foundation.
This course would focus on and study all the historical documents, which have historical value, especially those classics, which have being most influential in history of human civilization, such as:

  • works of Orientalism, including Egyptology and Assyriology, and Buddhism, Christianism and Islam;
  • classics of the ancient Greek and Roman periods;
  • classical works of the humanists’and the Christian humanists’;
  • writings of Enlightenment writers’;
  • Marxist classical works. This one would yet introduce theories, Methods, and History of Historical Philology for the graduates to get historical attainment.

Historical Theory and Methods
‘Historical Theory and Methods’ is one of the basic degree courses for the Master Degree Candidate of World History to study. By it, they could most have a lot of elementary knowledge, and build the World History studies preliminary foundation in order for the graduates to get specialized training and professional skills.
This course would, in topics forms, give a systematic introduction to the basic theories and basic approaches of World History studies, for example, Historical Materialism, Marxist World History theory, Revolutionary History, viewpoint of historical evolution, class analysis method, comparative History Studies, systematic History Studies, and long time research, etc. This one would also follow up new theories and methods of World History studies, for instance, theory of World History system, modernization theory, social history theory, Civilization History, Global History, overall historical viewpoint, Quantitative History, and Psychohistory for the students to form primary abilities to study World History independently.

Forward Issues on World History
‘Forward Issues on World History’ is one of the basic degree courses for the Master Degree Candidate of World History to study. By following up forward issues on World History, the graduates could understand latest developments of World History studies at home and abroad in order to encouraging them to study World History independently, or to take part in research field of their supervisors.
This course is mainly made of two parts: the one that would present the most hot and latest issues in World History studies, which include diversity of civilization, intercultural communication, international migration, international oceans, nation-state and globalization, Environmental History, Historical emotion factor. The students should be aware that it is very important for them not only to inherit Marxist traditions of historical studies, but also to pay attention to realistic care issue in History Study.

Special Subjects on the Western Cultural History
‘Special Subjects on the Western Cultural History’ is one of the professional degree courses for the Master Degree Candidate of World History to study. By dissecting western cultural phenomenon in different times, the graduates could deeply analyse periodical characters of the Occidentalism and learn accurately to approach to its value orientation and reference function to the development of the Chinese Civilization.
This seminar would, on the one hand, discuss connotation and origins of the Western Civilization and its being close to Orientalism, on the other hand, in special subjects method, study integral characteristic and stage characters and influences of Occidentalism, which would cover a lot of contents, for instance, Civilization of the Ancient Greece and Rome, the Medieval Christianism, and the Renaissance and the Reformation, rationalism culture,  romanticism culture, realistic culture, modernistic and post-modernism culture since the 15th century. Special Subjects on theAncient and Medieval History of the World
‘Special Subjects on the Ancient and Medieval History of the World’ is one of the professional degree courses for the Master Degree Candidate of World History to study. By learning its contents, the graduates could deepen related knowledge in during the undergraduate phase, and obtain skills of historically and scientifically surveying, and analyzing, and resolving many academic problems on the Ancient and Medieval History of the World.
