1. Program Description

Television Broadcasting Science of Nanjing Normal University is to integrated the characteristics of two disciplines, i.e. radio and television broadcasting as well as journalism, follow the educational philosophy that liberal arts and science are interpenetrated with each other, technology and art are combined together, software and hardware are possessed simultaneously, lay more emphasis on organic unity of students self-regulated learning and teachers professional guidance, and probe into the personnel training mode suitable for the development of radio and television industry through reasonably organizing the curriculums, optimizing the teaching structure and tracking the industrial forefront. Because of abundant faculty, powerful scientific research strength and advanced laboratory equipment, great achievements have been made in the teaching of Television Broadcasting. Nowadays, a large number of outstanding graduates have been cultivated by virtue of this program, active in national television news media at all levels, Party and government organs at all levels and universities, and become important forces in TV news and its educational development of China.

The program aims to cultivate the professionals with correct political orientation, who firmly advocate the leadership of Chinese communist party, love the socialist motherland, have a scientific world outlook, outlook on life and values, a sense of social responsibility and professional dedication, a good moral sentiment and professional morality, are able to collaborate with others, observe the law and discipline, and love their jobs in radio and television news. After studying the program, students will master relevant knowledge of journalism and communication as well as broadcasting television science, and have the basic abilities such as interviewing and television writing, review, writing and directing, videography and producing, and be engaged in the broadcasting television news editing, interviewing, hosting, program production, program planning, media operation and management in radio and television as well as other news propaganda departments, enterprises and public institutions, media operating management, etc.

2. Program Duration and Credit

This is a four-year undergraduate program. The program duration can be shortened or extended appropriately according to students actual conditions, at a minimum of three years and a maximum of seven years.

A total of 154 credits are required upon the completion of the program, including curriculums of general education of 49 credits, basic curriculums of 30 credits, essential curriculums of 45 credits and elective curriculums of 30 credits.

A student will be awarded with a Bachelors degree of Arts after completing the courses stipulated in the program, namely, after he or she gets total credits according to theRegulations of the People's Republic of China on Academic Degrees and Regulations of Awarding the Bachelors Degree of Nanjing Normal University.

100503142104  Journalism Theory  (3.00 cr.)

Journalism Theory is a basic theoretical course to journalism profession and it describes the basic phenomenon and law of communication and journalism. This course includes four sections: Essence Theory, Channel Theory, Control Theory, Management Theory and Theory of Party Media. Essence Theory mainly introduces the connotation of Journalism and sums up the basic law of news communication activities. Channel Theory carefully analyses the news communication course on the basic of five links of media, content, gatekeeper, audience and effect. Control Theory studies model and law of how political power, capital power and social relation control journalism. Management Theory discusses management system and cooperation model of news media. The Theory of Party Media introduces the main sources and contents of socialism news ideology.

Prerequisites:  Journalism Theory

This course serves as an introductory course for students to gain an overview of communication theory and the history of communication study. The course, which represents a sampling of the outstanding breakthrough discoveries in mass communication research over the past six decades, introduces students to a broad range of issues concerning the role, effects and limitations of communication in modern society. Upon completion, students will have a full understanding of communication studies and communication theories, which can be implemented to explain practical communication phenomena and conduct communication researches.

Introduction to Television and Broadcasting is one of the most important courses in Department of Broadcasting and Television. It focuses on the electronic media -- Television and Broadcasting. Given the basic theoretical framework of Communication, it elaborates comprehensively on the practice and latest developments in and abroad. Also it centers on following four main parts: 1. The basic attributes, media characteristics and social functions;2. The history and developments;3. The main program types;4. The operating management and the rules and regulation.

Prerequisites:  Introduction to Camera

This course explores the economic, technological, aesthetic, and ideological characteristics of the television medium, studies the historical development of television and video including analysis of key works and introduces the TV/video theory and criticism.

100503143003  Television Editing (4.00 cr.)

Prerequisites: Non-linear Editing

As a main course in Department of Broadcasting and Television, it focus on not only the theory and knowledge, but also the practice and creativity.

This course mainly includes two teaching methods: classroom learning and laboratory training. The main contents are: basic knowledge of TV editing, basic operation skills, editor thinking principle, technique and skills, the editing practice of the main types of film and television works, etc.

Prerequisites: Outline of Broadcast and Television

As a specialized course, this course aims to cultivate student's professional accomplishment and interview skills. This course focuses on the interview skills such as subject selection, interview process, interview planning, access method, observation method and so on. In the process of teaching, a variety of teaching practices have been used, such as interview assignment and simulated conference to improve the capacity of interview.

100503143007  Introduction to Radio and Television Technology  (4.00 cr.)

This course is the basic course of MajorRadio and Television, which introduces the basic knowledge of radio and television technology and related standards, the composition and production methods of radio and television systems. This course,aims to improve students' practical operating abilities, is based on the theory of broadcasting. Through a variety of teaching methods,this course will improve students' knowledge of radio and TV technology as well as the operation skills.

Prerequisites: Understanding Selected TV Program

Audiovisual Language is set as the main course for students who major in Radio and Television, belonging to the basic theory of directing. Focusing on discussing the law of audiovisual language from the perspective of montage (syntax) and shot (morphology), this course includes the following contents: material and psychological basis, general grammar and rhetoric, basic narrative rule, the main constituent element and applying rule of audiovisual language. This course aims to help student to construct audiovisual system and foster their ability of expressing by using audiovisual language.

Prerequisites: Television Interview

This course will contrast news practice with modern thoughts about journalism on the basis of in-depth news reporting theory, trying to reveal the nature of television in depth reporting and unique rules. And on this basis, it will train students on every link of TV in-depth report production to enhance their ability of depth reporting with the requirements of the development of the new century. This course is based on "theory with practice, focus on practical", trying to illustrate the typical examples, analysis, and strive to reveal the laws and production methods of television depth reports through case analysis.

Prerequisites: Theory of Journalism

Combining theory and practice,this course pays attention to the study and use of journalism comment and writing in the contemporary era,including the scientific theories of journalism comment and the basic procedures and useful skills of writing.By learning this course,students could master the knowledge of journalism comment,improve their writing capacity through training comment and get scientific ideas which are good for their work in the future.
