2. The Education System and Credit
The educational system of full-time postgraduate is three years. The length of learning period in school (including suspension, such as interrupt learning time) should not be more than five years. The outstanding graduate students who can complete the courses and the dissertations in advance, can apply for a defense in advance and early graduation.
The total credits should be not less than 30 credits, among which the degree courses are no less than 19 credits.
3. Core Curriculum and Courses
Western Sociological Theory
Through the learning process, this course aims at enabling students to master the main system of western social theory, and use skillfully the sociological theory to analyze and explain the social reality. This course is a sociology major basic course, meanwhile the main course of other disciplines, such as social work, social security and folklore. It mainly introduces the origin and development of western sociology theory and sociology with both of the classical theory and the contemporary theory, including the main theories such as: the symbolic interaction theory, ethnomethodology, structuralization theory, structural functionalism theory, Neo functionalism theory, evolutionary theory, conflict theory, exchange theory, rational choice theory, interaction theory, structuralism theory, post-structuralism theory and critical theory.
Social Research Methods
Through the learning process, this course is designed to enable students to master the principle of social study, the logical method and scientific procedures, and learn how to use the method of qualitative and quantitative to do the investigation of social phenomena and collection, collation, analysis, interpretation and evaluation based on the investigation data. This course is a science to understand, describe and explain the social phenomena by using the scientific methods. The purpose of it is to explain and predict human society as the object by using scientific methods as a means in the guidance of scientific theories and methods as a complete process. The contents of the course include social research methodology, topic selection and design of social studies, social measurement, types of social studies, sampling survey, questionnaire design, data sorting, statistical analysis methods and research report writing.
Advanced Social Statistics and Social Statistics Software Application
This course aims to enable students to master the advanced social statistics and social statistical software application knowledge, provides a quantitative research method to study the complex social phenomenon. The contents include:
- Detailed-analysis analysis: the basic principle and method of the detailed-analysis analysis, the statistical analysis of net correlation coefficient; the principle and calculation formula of multiple correlation coefficient.
- Analysis of variance review: the basic principles and ideas of multivariate analysis of variance, the data requirements and assumptions of multivariate analysis of variance, types of two factor analysis of variance, variance analysis of non-interacted double factors, variance analysis of interacted double factor, multiple comparisons of analysis of variance.
- Discriminate analysis: basic ideas of discriminate analysis, distance discriminate analysis, Fisher (Fisher) discrimination, the effect evaluation of discrimination, the basic steps and application examples of discriminate analysis.
- Principal component analysis: the basic ideas of principal component analysis, geometry meaning, computational procedure of principal component analysis, the practical application of principal component analysis.
- Factor analysis: the related concept and the basic principle of factor analysis, mathematical model, basic steps (correlative matrix, extracting common factors, the rotation factor) and case demonstration.
- Cluster analysis: the basic principle, basic method，basic process of cluster analysis, hierarchical cluster analysis, quick cluster analysis and case demonstration.
- SPSS software application.
The Theory of Folklore
This course focuses on the basic principle, theories and schools of the folklore, to enable the students to understand and master the basic methods of folklore studies. Contents include folk customs and folklore; folk characteristics and structure; the inheritance and variation of the folklore; the functions of folklore; basic theories and schools of folklore; folklore research methods.
Through the study of the course, students can master the basic theory and basic knowledge of the community, to learn to analysis the practical problems in community service, community management and community construction by using the theory and method of community research. This course is a science to study community activities and law by using theories and scientific methods of multi principle such as sociology, social work and public management. It is also a new subject with academic foundation and practical basis. The content includes the summary of community, the theories and achievements community research, community construction and community management, community social security, community service, community correction, social capital and community construction, and construction of rural community, community construction and urban and rural integration and the research of community building model.
Through the study of this course, students are expected to master theory and the basic principles of modernization, to lay a good foundation for a scientific understanding of the status and influence of the modernization in the social development, to learn to analysis, explain the social phenomena by using the perspective of modernization theory in the course of modernization of China. This course is a new social frontier science discipline raised in 1950s, has the characteristics of comprehensive and practical research. The course contents include the rise and development of the theory of modernization, modern research method, and the origin of the theory of modernization, the modernization of science and general theory, modern history, modernization in historical stages, modernization of stratification, modernization in regions, modernization in departments, policies of modernization, the actual application of the modern theory and the new direction of modernization theory etc.
Through the study of the course, students are enabled to master the basic theory and basic knowledge of economics and sociology, and learn to use economic sociology theory and method to analysis some of the problems in economic behavior, economic system and economic system; and learn to analyze the inherent relationship between social economy and in real life from the perspective of economic sociology. Economic sociology is a branch of sociology, the main contents include: research object and research methods of economic sociology, the idea origin and development of economic sociology, social interaction and the operation of the market mechanism, control and evolution of enterprise organization form, culture and economy; network and economic life, system and economy, economic transition and social development.
Classical Readings of Folklore Literatures
Through reading of classic works of folklore from inboard and outboard, students are expected to understand the development history, contents and methods of folklore research, to cultivate the ability of students to read literature. The selections of classical academic works in the history of the development of folklore will be discussed from the academic research topics, research methods, data collection and analysis and writing methods. Classic covers topics on folklore theory and method, folk songs and ballads, religion, clan, customs of social organizations, living customs and intangible cultural heritage. Selections include western ethnographic works in early period, modern contemporary studies, ethnography and monographs in different historical periods of China. Students' research interests are combined with the reading list. The reading method is based on the relevant papers and monographs. The students are required to master the basic ability of reading notes and classified analysis of the relevant research results.
The Theory and Method of Cultural Anthropology
Through the learning of the course, students are enabled to understand and master the history and theories of the development of cultural anthropology, to explore the basic problems of cultural anthropology and the research methods of cultural anthropological studies. Main contents include the theories and development history of cultural anthropology, branches of cultural anthropology, research methods of cultural anthropology, research topics, research methods of folklore.
