2. Program Duration and Credit

Three years generally, the maximum school years are not longer than 7 years (including the extension time)
20 credits of courses in total, at least 12 credits of academic courses.

3.Core Courses and Introduction

Selected Topics of Philosophy
The course presents in the form of specific topics, including Philosophy of Rationalism and empiricism; Positivism and existentialism; Mechanism and Dialectics; Analytic Philosophy and Postmodernism, and Chinese traditional Confucianism Taoist Philosophy. Through discussions, doctorial students can grasp universalism and relativism trend of philosophy, knowing the relation between “be” and “to be” in ontology, treating the world in static and mechanic way or dynamically and dialectically; and understand the value of linguistic philosophy and the subversion postmodernism to traditional philosophy. As to Chinese philosophy, the course mainly aims at helping students understand the philosophy of Confucius, Menci, Laozi and Chaung Tzu, and comparison between Chinese philosophy and Western philosophy.

Methodology for Philosophy and Social Science
The aim of the course is to cultivate doctoral students with the basic methodology for studying social scientific theories and practices, including the method of self-study and self-gaining knowledge, determining the research subject and getting down to research, strengthening their ability of cognition and grasp various problems, analysis and elucidation of problems. The course lays emphasis on the cultivating ability of students to acquire knowledge, academic resolution, scientific research and innovation, so in the curriculum content divide into four parts:

  • Professor Xiaoxi Wang Lecturing academic approach and method of philosophy and social science
  • Professor Liangzao Yu Lecturing reading method of classics
  • Professor Lulu Wang lecturing literature collection, topic selection, thesis proposal and writing
  • Outside professors lecturing thesis writing and publication, method and technique of project applying. Thus, the feature of the course is the unification of method and application, and the combination of internal and external expertise

Close Reading of Classics in Marxist Philosophy
The purpose of the course is to help students grasp basic standpoint, viewpoint and methodology of Marxist philosophy through a number of classical authors of Marxism, clarifying formation and development of Marxist philosophy, deepening the cognition and understanding of Marxist philosophy principles, and training the ability of analyzing and solving problems through Marxist philosophy. The main content of the course is as follows:

  • the early philosophy of Marx, including Doctoral Dissertation, Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844,Theses on Feuerbach, etc.
  • Philosophy works of coauthor of Marx and Engels, mainly including The Holy family, The German ideology, The communist Manifesto, etc.
  • Philosophy of Engels, especially in his old age, including Anti Duhring,  Ludwig Feuerbach and the End of German Classical Philosophy, etc.
  • Philosophy works of Lenin, mainly Materialism and Empiriocriticism, On Dialectics, Philosophy Notes, etc.

Frontiers of Contemporary Western Philosophy
This course is designed to introduce new theories, trends or issues in the frontiers of contemporary Western philosophy. Professors select recent articles and important works from the publications of a number of famous Western philosophers, which represent most of the new developments in philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, analytic philosophy, meta-ethics, aesthetics, etc. in the West.  The course is intended to provide new issues, new doctrine, new ideas, new trends in Western philosophy for Ph.D. graduates to choose from as the themes for their dissertations, or to update their knowledge of Western philosophy.
