2. Program Duration and Credit

Three years generally, the maximum school years are not longer than 6 years (including the extension time).
18 credits of courses in total, at least 14 credits of academic courses.

3. Core Courses and Introduction

Literature Studies on Arts
This course aims to assist students in fully understanding the basic processes and rules concerning the origin and development of Chinese and foreign arts by reading Chinese and Western arts literature. Students are also expected to develop awareness of famous thoughts in art history, methodology and achievements in historical studies, so as to lay a solid foundation for future research and teaching. The content of the course includes the following components:

  • Selected readings and research on classical works on Chinese art history
  • Selected readings and research on classical works on Western art history

Art History and History of Ideas
This course is designed to expand the ideas in art research, to explore the relationship between art and the history of mankind and between art and reality from the perspective of ideological history, and to illustrate the enormous influence of artistic concepts during the course of human history, so as to enable students to master the basic knowledge of history of ideas and relevant research methods. The content of the course includes the following components:

  • The concept of the history of ideas
  • Academic history of the history of ideas
  • Emergence, development, and influence of Renaissance ideas
  • History of ideas for art
  • Status quo of studies on the history of Ideas

Studies on Western Classical Painting Theories
The objective of this course is to help students learn more about Chinese and Western artistic traditions, and grasp the important ancient painting theories, thoughts, literature sources and research methods. The content of the course includes:

  • Selected readings on literature of Chinese classical painting
  • History of Chinese ancient painting theories
  • Selected readings of literature on Western classical painting
  • History of Western painting theories

Theoretical Studies on Fine Arts Creation
By studying and analyzing successful cases by outstanding artists, students are expected to understand Chinese and foreign theories on artistic creation as well as methods and rules in the process of creation, so as to lay a solid theoretical foundation for future art creation. The content of the course includes:

  • Ancient Chinese classical art theory
  • Western art creation theory
  • Psychological study on art creation
  • Case studies on famous artists
  • Methodological discussions and practice in art creation

Ideological History of Fine Arts Education
The objective of this course is to develop an in-depth understanding of the course of development of Chinese and Western fine arts education, so that students can learn to view the tendencies in contemporary artistic ideological education from the perspective of historical comparison, and to discern similarities and differences between Chinese and Western art education ideas from a comparative point of view. The content of the course includes:

  • Pre-Qin-Dynasty philosophers' ideas on art education
  • Art education ideas from Han Dynasty to Ming and Qing dynasties
  • Educational ideas on practical crafts art
  • modern art education ideas
  • Ancient Greek art education ideas
  • Art education ideas during the Renaissance
  • Art education ideas during the 17th and 18th centuries
  • Art education ideas during the 19th century thought
  • Modern art education ideas during the 20th century
