Film Photography and Production

1. Program Description

Nanjing Normal University was approved to set up the program of Film Photography and Production in 2015, and begins to enroll new students in 2016. In the era of new media, the program of Film Photography and Production adapts to digital development trend of imaging technology; integrates picture photography, video shooting, film and television sound production, film and television post-production, film director and other disciplines; regards two basic teaching objectives, i.e. image production and sound production, as the framework; reflects teaching characteristics of mastering many skills while specializing in one in terms of professional curriculum design in order to cultivate the professionals of photography and production required by the film and television dissemination industry.

Objectives of personnel training of the program are as below: Based on the internal rules of film and television transmission, with a view to practical needs and future development of film and television dissemination, through the systematic professional learning, the program is to make students master main theories and knowledge of film photography and production, familiar with policies, regulations and business of the film production and dissemination industry, to cultivate applied talents of film production with correct political direction, extensive cultural quality, high artistic culture, keen social observation ability, broad international vision and skilled professional skills, competent at film and television program planning, collecting and producing, editing, dissemination and management in radio and television broadcasters and other media, enterprises and public institutions.

2. Program Duration and Credit

This is a four-year undergraduate program. The program duration can be shortened or extended appropriately according to students actual conditions, at a minimum of three years and a maximum of seven years.

A total of 169 credits are required upon the completion of the program, including curriculums of general education of 49 credits, basic curriculums of 29 credits, essential curriculums of 61 credits and elective curriculums of 30 credits.

A student will be awarded with a bachelors degree of Arts after completing the courses stipulated in the program, namely, after he or she gets total credits according to the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Academic Degrees and Regulations of Awarding the Bachelors Degree of Nanjing Normal University.

4. Core Courses and Introductions

101303142204  Film and Television Photography（4.00 cr.）

The Film and Television Photography is a course that emphasizes on practice. The course will combine theory with practice and introduce the thoughts of TV video such as what is TV video, the structure and function of TV video, the definition and rules of scenes, shooting techniques of fixed lens or sports lens, the position of camera when shooting, the method of more axes, shooting techniques under different environments and how to shoot in the studio, etc. Large numbers of cases will be used in the course and the students will be trained with skills and the ability of practical application of TV production. At the same time, the course will tell students how to understand the shooting techniques of TV photography based on the skill training with TV Edition and the language of video-audio by the workshop method, so that students know how to shoot creatively and actively.

Teaching contents of this course can be divided into three parts: television edition principles, television edition operation methods and edition skills for various kinds of television programs. Based on the foundation of Montage constitution principles and video ways of thinking , combined typical text with students’ creative activity, the course specifically teaches and practices the thinking methods and the audience’s audiovisual psychology and behavior in television edition, principles and skills of organizing and connecting shoots, thinking and operations of television audio edition, skills for organize different sections of television programs, and also makes a brief introduction about the edition skills for various kinds of television programs.

This course focuses on the basic form of film and television photography composition, the basic principle of photographic composition and basic methods, such as the main form of composition, including photographic images of point, line and plane composition, center and the main body of the outstanding techniques, the form of a variety of composition, composition for foil function of themes. This course will focus on the going out shooting practice, homework evaluation and self-evaluation methods to improve students' shooting skills. Under the premise of scientific and systemic learning, italso emphasizes on the practice of photographic composition technology. As the main contents of this course, students are required to firmly grasp the basic knowledge and skills. Through learning this course, students are required to master the art of photography composition rule and the basic forms of law, combine theory with practice in the shooting process, at the same time, have innovation consciousness.

This course will make an comprehensive introduction about the basic concepts and connotation of television lighting and design, the task and the traits of television lighting and design, lighting and the nature of different light colors, including chroma and its corresponding emotions, and the basic modeling capability of television lighting and design. The course will make students grasp the modeling capability of television lighting and design, the basic principles, rules, skills and application methods through the introduction of natural light and artificial light.

This course is a basic elective course that focuses on the basic knowledge of recording, combining the cases in the training of students to tell the students how to listen and what to listen. Then have experiment class on the basis of the establishment of the audio-visual sense to train the hands-on ability for the students and test their sound production level.

This course is a major course for the Advertising Major. Students should first grasp the basic knowledge of camera and editing before they have this course.Combining the requirements of film and television advertising creation, this course will make the students use the film and television advertising creative methods, planning techniques, photography camera digital information such as image production methods and techniques flexibly and comprehensively. It will also have comprehensive simulation practice exercises of film and television advertising creation through the thesis production.

This course is one of selective and practical courses in major of Film Photography and Production. It provides a platform, which can make students accomplish their productions of Microfilm or Micro-video that meet the standards of the Industry independently. It will help the students get familiar with the process of video making and improve their knowledge and skills before they go out into the society.

101303143011  Documentary Creation Practice (4.00 cr.)

The contents of this course can be divided into three parts: cultural theory on documentary, shooting process of documentary and group production practice of documentary. Cultural theory on documentary mainly includes: the brief history and schools of documentary, ontological concept and values and standpoints of documentary, practice of aesthetic style, developing status and future directions of Chinese and foreign documentaries; shooting process of documentary mainly includes: theme discovery, story search, shooting constituting methods; group production practice of documentary mainly includes: shooting program planning, use of common shooting methods and the innovation of unique shooting methods in the shooting site, second found, text constitution and other thinking ways in the post-creation.

The course mainly takes the teaching style of a combination of basic theory explaining and skills experimental training. Teaching in classroom mainly takes in the ways of theory explaining, masterpiece watching and analyzing, students discuss, students’ work commenting and so on; experimental and practice is based on the foundation of the training of basic methods, the course will forge the students’ ability in actual field operation and ability to control the actual situation, and thus improve the students’ comprehensive accomplishment in this aspect.
