Early Childhood Education

The history of Department of Early Childhood Education in Nanjing Normal University can be traced back to 1943, when Mr Chen Heqin established the first National Preschool Teachers College. In 1952, Nanjing Normal College was established and the first independent Department of Early Childhood Education was formed. In 1994, the department was authorized to confer Doctor of Early Childhood Education by the State Council, making it the first doctoral program in early childhood education national wide. In 2001, the discipline of early childhood education was accorded national key discipline status, offering undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs. In 2015, we were selected by the Ministry of Education to be listed in the “Projects of Reform on Preschool Education Teacher Preparation: Achieving Excellence”, as well as awarded the “Flagship Major” by the Department of Education, Jiangsu Provincial Government.

1. Program Description

Early Childhood Education undergraduate program aims to cultivate “research-oriented preschool teachers” by preparing students to be competent, knowledgeable and innovative early childhood educators, practitioners, researchers and administrators. Successful graduates are expected to have passion and responsibility to early childhood education with solid background in child development, social science and humanities. Graduates are also expected to have the ability to master practical skills of working with young children in various preschool settings, and demonstrate confidence, integrity and perseverance. Meanwhile, students are expected to demonstrate basic skills of conducting research in order to respond to and solve various problems when working with children.

2.  Program Duration and Credit

This is a four-year undergraduate program, which can be completed within a minimum of three years and a maximum of seven years.

A total of 170 credits are required upon the completion of the program.

3. Curriculum

Four modules of courses are offered for the program: General Education Curriculum, Basic Curriculum, Essential Curriculum, and Elective Curriculum. The Basic and Essential curricula are compulsory for a Bachelor’s degree. 

The Elective Curriculum in the list includes extended disciplinary courses offered by the school into which an individual student is admitted, as well as cross disciplinary courses offered by other schools. Students can choose the extended and cross disciplinary courses according to their personal interests and career plans; however, credits should be approved by the School.

100401042101 Introduction to Education (3 credits)

This course provides a survey of the historical, philosophical, sociological, psychological, and curricular aspects of education. It is through a study of the foundations of education that the school's role in society and its responsibility to help solve social problems are made clear to students. Thus students develop an understanding of the structure and mission of present-day schools. They also learn to appreciate the historical significance of education and begin to formulate their own understanding of the professional aspects of teaching. This will enable them to make sound decisions relative to the delivery of instruction. Emphasis is upon teaching as a profession.  

Upon the successful completion of this course, students will understand the evolution of education and the relationship between society and society. This includes understanding the importance of education for teachers, the role of environment and education in the process of development, national education system and schools (kindergarten) education in all aspects of the work, and the background and focus of school education reform.

100401042103 General Psychology (B) (3 credits)

This course helps students to master the basic concepts and principles in psychology, form a scientific attitude and rudimentary interest toward psychology. This is the fundamentals for both theory and method studying of others courses in psychology and education. It’s a fundamental course for undergraduates majoring psychology. General concepts and principles in psychology were introduced, including the cognitive processes such as sensation, perception, memory, thinking and speech, et al., emotional processes, conation processes, as well as the mental status such as hypnosis and attention, mental characteristics such as motivation, temperament and character.  

Students should understand the basic framework of psychology, show the scientific knowledge about the subjects, current status, function and research methods of psychology, and master the basic concepts and principles for many psychological phenomena, and learn what psychology studies and how to make studies after studying this course.

100401042102 Educational Psychology   (3 credits)

This course helps students to understand the particularity of education, as well as the relationship between psychology and education; to comprehend the classic learning theory and modern cognitive learning theory, master the mental process and general law of students' learning; to understand the concept and classification system of learning strategies so as to guide the students' learning; and to master the mental process of moral learning, as well as the strategy and method of moral education. Educational Psychology is a series of courses that reflect the psychological process as well as the regular of teachers' teaching and students' learning.

Main contents include: the relationship between education and learning, theories of learning, influences of teachers' teaching and students' learning, learning transfer, learning strategies and methods, moral learning, etc.

100401042105 China Educational History   (3 credits)

The main purpose of this course is making students understand and master the process of education system and educational ideology (including occurrence, development and evolution) of China since ancient times. The course summarizes experience lessons and feature of different historical stages of education. It makes a scientific evaluation, and explores the objective law of education development. It helps students broaden their horizons of educational knowledge and lay foundation for further studying other educational courses. 

This course teaches the history of Chinese education system and educational thought from ancient times. The history of Chinese education system is taught in one era after another, it includes: content of education policy, establishing process and significance; the process of system establishment of school system, its effects on social development; the evolution of management of students and teachers in school, contents of course and teaching organization form, etc. History of educational thought is taught in the generation time of different School and Thought sequentially. The principle is to focus and clarify the development of education thought, the main content is educationists’ thoughts and life stories in different dynasties.

100401042104 Foreign Educational History   (3 credits)

The main purpose of this course is to help students understand foreign education system and the theory of education and the development history, explore the rules of the development of the education, learn to use the Marxist viewpoint and method, practical and realistic analysis and evaluation of education, education ideas, and can contact our country's education practice, learn from our own things, provide a reference for our country's education reform.

Students are expected to understand the different views about the origin of "education problem", mainly introducing the origin of education of Marxist theory point of view, to understand the status of the primitive society to the development of education and its basic characteristics; Understand a few ancient slavery in the development of national education, understand the emergence and development of ancient education thought, mainly introduces the education thoughts of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Quintilian; Understand the developmental status of western European feudal education, understanding of the Renaissance humanism education thought; Understanding of modern countries education system, the establishment and development of basic education historical facts; Understand several modern educators main education point of view, and carries on the analysis and evaluation; Understanding of Europe's new education movement and the progress of the socialist education movement in the United States; To understand a few countries the process of establishment and development of modern education system.

100401042221 Seminars on Introduction to Early Childhood Education (2 credits)

This course enables students to understand the professional future jobs of the social value and individual value, based on the formation of professional commitment. To make students aware of the importance of professional competence and professional learning on the basis of understanding the excellent work of their predecessors. To enable students to understand the professional four years of learning programs, combined with the future development direction of the individual to have a good plan for individual learning. 

This course is combined with the students' professional practice, the importance and achievement of the development of the early stage of life in the early stage of the development of the kindergarten teachers and other children's early education. Chen Heqin and preschool education predecessors video playback, show them to promote the well-being of children and early development of the exploration process, to clarify the professional practitioners of quality requirements and professional learning needs. Teach and introduce the course plan of this major, guide the students to set up their own development goals and plan their own course of study and learning process.

100401042220 Preschool Hygiene Education (3 credits)

Hygiene education is one of the main courses in the professional field of preschool education. It is mainly responsible for the students to obtain the childcare knowledge and develop the childcare ability. It is a practical course, and also is the main theoretical basis for kindergarten education and health care. This course is divided into six parts. The first part deals with physical health of preschool children, discussing the rules and influencing factors of their growth and development. The second part relates to mental health of preschool children, discussing some common problems. The third part concerns nutritional health of preschool children, discussing infant feeding, child diet and Kindergarten dietary management. The forth part is about health of educational process in nurseries and kindergartens, discussing the healthy requirements of life system and physical exercise, which is based on the activity rhythm of the cerebral cortex. The fifth part introduces the health of school building and equipment in nurseries and kindergartens, including the healthy requirements of teaching aid, stationery, furniture, kindergarten sites, lighting, ventilation, etc. The last part is concerned with the common diseases and their precautionary measures of preschool children, introducing general knowledge of infectious diseases and early precaution of adult diseases.

Child development is a study of the physical, emotional, social and cognitive factors of growth and development of children from birth through adolescence. This course is an introduction to prenatal through adolescent growth and development which serves as the foundation upon which practical work with children is based. Topics covered include principles, stages and theories of growth and development. The course will introduce the sequence of development starting with prenatal development and progressing through adolescence. Students can expect to learn about the typical growth of children so they can better respond to each stage of development.

By the time students complete this course, they will be able to: recognize factors affecting the physical growth and health of students and know that students’ physical growth and health impact their development in other domains; describe how brain research impacts current knowledge of growth and development. Analyze ways in which factors in the home and community impact student learning; know the typical stages of cognitive, social, physical and emotional development; explain cognitive development from conception through adolescence and demonstrate knowledge of developmental changes in children’s thinking; understand the role of learning theory in the instructional process and uses instructional strategies and appropriate technologies to facilitate student; recognize the wide range of individual developmental differences that characterizes students and the implications of this developmental variation for instructional planning; demonstrate skills in practical application of developmental principles and theories, observation techniques and recognition of growth and developmental patterns.

100401043010 Literature for Young Children (3 credits)

The course aims to prepare for the study of “Language Education of Preschool Children”, and make the students understand children through the reading of children’s literature. The course includes the following: First, within the analysis of essential characteristics of children's literature, to make children's literature properties clear, it rethinks profoundly the phenomenon that children's literature has long been  treated as a tool in literature field and puts forward the nature of children's literature. Second, with the discussion of acceptability, one characteristic of children's literature, children's literature and children's correspondence, it describes how to match children's literature with children's life experiences, how to meet the characteristics of children's thinking and language developing level. Third, to explore the internal educational function of children's literature and the important impact on children's language, emotional, social, and intellectual development aspects; on this basis, it will interpret the transferring method and teacher's role in transfer and other transferring related problems. The last part of the course will have a thematic discussion on fairy tale, children's poetry, picture books, stories, fables and other representative styles, introducing the characteristics of each genre, type and specific educational functions on children’ development.

100401043054 Research Methods in Preschool Education (1)

& 100401043055 Research Methods in Preschool Education (2)   (6 credits)

This course aims to help students understand the preschool education research status  and prospect, to stimulate the students' research consciousness and raise research interests, and then plans to help students to master the basic procedures and skills of the preschool education research methods, in order to be able to do normative research. This course is divided into two semester units. The first semester content includes the general knowledge of preschool education research methods, research design and application of observational method.  The second semester content includes questionnaire application, interview application and expression of the research production. The foundational teaching method is learn in doing, learn how to do research by doing research.

100401043052 Children’s Play   (3 credits)

Play of Preschool Children systematically introduces the principle, structure and practical operation, etc. On analyzing the current domestic and international influential theories of children education, this course introduces the important value for children's development and the basic characteristics of preschool children's play, discusses the inevitability of existence of play in preschool institutions, introduces the status of recent research of the play in kindergarten; On analyzing “play is basic activity in kindergarten” that is advocated by The kindergarten guidance program, 3-6years old children’s learning and development guidelines. This course discusses strategies and methods of effectively guide children's play for teachers. This course not only concerns the organization and guiding strategies of group activities in normal education institutions, but also introduces play therapy methods for diagnosing the development of individual children that useful for children's development.

This course can help the students to understand the preschool children's play theory and present situation of practice research comprehensively, and can build the bridges for conversion from conception to practice. This course helps students to understand the basic concepts and theories about children’s play; guide students to establish correct views on children and children’s play; and develop students' ability of using theory to observe, analyze, evaluate and guide the practice preliminary.

100401043050 Early Childhood Physical Education (3 credits)

This course aims to help students to acquire the general rule of children's motor development and the motor learning theory, and master goals of physical education, core experiences of physical movement and the principles of sports activities, to have ability to design various exercises activities, and be capable to evaluate the development level of children's motor. The course is divided into five parts: The first part introduces kindergarten physical education basics; the second part introduces kindergarten physical education basic theory. The third introduces the basic principles of designing kindergarten physical activities; the forth part is about the design of various physical activities; the last one is about how to evaluate the development level of children motor. This course will teaching by many methods. For example, instruct case, discuss, and practice and so on. This course will arrange one practicum for three class hours.

100401043047 Early Childhood Art Education (3 credits)

By learning what the syllabus has listed, we aim to prepare the students to master what and how to teach in fine arts for preschool children based on their knowledge about the rules and age features in terms of preschool children’s development in art, and cultivate their ability of having practice in fine art education for preschool education by using correct education philosophy as their guideline. Firstly, this curriculum describes the fine arts of preschool children and the nature& features of the education about it. Secondly, it also describes the development rules of fine arts for preschool children and features of fine arts development of children in different age periods by analyzing children’s works. Based on these, it analyzes the objectives and content system of fine arts education for preschool children from the practical cases and concretely has an analysis about how to make specific objectives of fine arts education. 

This course puts an emphasis on how to design drawing, handwork and art appreciation activities for children, it also analyzes how to implement different types of design drawing, handwork and art appreciation activities in kindergarten combing a large amount of practical cases, meanwhile it states and analyzes how to get the fine art activities and other activities in kindergarten permeated and integrated from theoretic and practical point of view, thus realizes the value of fine arts. In the end, it analyzes how to evaluate children’s fine arts by the result or in the process, and how to have activities related to fine arts education for teacher.

100401043051 Early Childhood Music Education (3 credits)

This course provides an introduction of diverse foundations of music education for students in early childhood area. The purpose of this course is to explore the practice of different international music education theories and pedagogies in Chinese music teaching activities for early childhood. This course is composed of four sections: 1. foundations of music education, 2. globe music education theories and pedagogies, 3. the characters, objects, contents and evaluations of music education for early childhood, 4. pre-school music teaching activities.

100401043046 Early Childhood Science Education  (3 credits)

This course helps students to understand the role of science education in child development, grasp the rule of children’s science learning, apply the theory to teach children effectively and promote their development. This course mainly introduces the characteristic of children’s science learning and basic theories of early childhood science education; goal, content and methods of early childhood science education; designing and guiding children’s learning activities; integration science into early childhood curriculum.

100401043053 Early Childhood Literacy Education  (3 credits)

This course leads students to know about the law of children's language development, to understand the contents of the preschool children's language education, the principles and teaching strategies, and to make the design and organization of different types of language activities.  The course includes three parts. The first is the theory of children’s language development, including language acquisition, phonology, lexicon, semantics, pragmatics, language test, language disorders and therapy.  The second is about language teaching, including the contents, principles and teaching strategies. The last part is about the design and organization of different types of language activities, including narrative, conversation, language play, and early reading.

100401043049 Early Childhood Mathematics Education  (3 credits)

This course helps students to understand the role of mathematics education in child development, grasp the relationship between cognitive development and the construction of mathematics knowledge, apply the theory to teach children effectively and promote their development. This course mainly introduces the characteristic of children’s mathematics learning and basic theories of early childhood mathematics education; goal, content and methods of early childhood mathematics education; designing and guiding children’s learning activities; evaluation of early childhood mathematics education.

100401043045 Early Childhood Health Education (3 credits)

This course concerns that preschool children’s health is very valuable for either individuals or human beings, and discusses the problems of preschool children’s lifestyle which has not yet been paid sufficient attention. It shows scientific ideals of preschool children’s health, and summarizes the important historical thoughts of preschool children’s health education, and discusses the great value of health education for the development in preschool children’s body, cognition, morality and aesthetics. Based on analyzing the domestic and international influential theories of health education, it studies the basic rules of formation and retention of preschool children’s health behavior, and introduces the recent health education research of kindergartens. According to the spirit of "Guide for Learning and Development of Children Aged 3-6 Years ", it constructs comprehensive educational object and content system of kindergartens health education, and discusses how to integrate kindergarten curriculums based on the preschool children’s law of physical and mental development, and promote the healthy growth and development of preschool children.

100401043048 Early Childhood Social Development (3 credits)

This course helps students grasping the classic theories of social development about human being; understanding the social psychological needs and behavior; learning the practical ways and methods of managing children’s behavior and emotion; and updating the social development level, empowering their ability of behavior management as educators. The content of this course is related to the classic theories and practices of 0-6 year old children’s social development. It focuses on the ways of children’s self, emotional and social behavior teaching program. The students who take this course are required to 1 finishing the learning of Children’ Psychology, 2 having the experiences of children’ behaviors observing and evaluation.

100401043058 Preschool Curriculum (3 credits)

This course aims to help students to master basic principle of the kindergarten curriculum development, and learn domestic and foreign classic kindergarten curriculum program and the kindergarten educational activity design pattern, and then enhance students' ability of curriculum development. The course divide into three parts: The first part introduces kindergarten course overview. Through analyzing various curriculum essences, help students to build up correct kindergarten curriculum essence, understand kindergarten curriculum form, structure and basic characteristics. The second part introduces basic principles of kindergarten curriculum development, that detailed introduce basic theory and practice technology of curriculum development separately from four aspects of objectives, content, implementation and evaluation. The third part introduces domestic and foreign classic kindergarten course schemes and education activities design patterns. which includes Montessori curriculum plan, Five-fingers activity curriculum, HIGH/SCOPE courses, Pre-school knowledge systematic teaching, Italian Reggio curriculum plan, unit theme activities design thought,  project activities design ideas, regional activity design thought, and field activity design ideas, etc.  The course will teaching by many methods. For example, instruct, case, discuss, practice and so on. This course will arrange two times probations, total ten class hours.

Through this practicum, students should be able to link the major concepts and principles of main courses to the field phenomena, so as to get better understanding of teaching and learning in different domains in kindergarten. Students will conduct structured observation on children’s behavior, teacher-child interaction on kindergarten group activities and center activities. Several collective reflective discussions will accompany with this kind of observation in order to promote the students ' understanding about children's learning in different discipline domain and accumulate some experiences about how to teach .

The main purpose of this course is to help students accumulate practical experiences through observing, thinking and doing,enhance their skills of guidance and teaching and working with parents in the authentic context. Students will focus on the weakness they realized through Student Teaching and try to make themselves more skillful. Furthermore, students may try to improve their awareness of research and their research abilities through involving in the authentic teaching and learning environment. Students will participate in the authentic teaching and learning environment. Firstly, observing for a whole week to become familiar with the daily routines, then gradually taking the role of teacher to guidance and teaching the children. Student teachers should learn to make lesson  plan based on classroom assessment, make reflection every day and revise lesson plan under supervising of supervising teachers .Through student teaching ,students will conduct the real class from dependent to independent ,meanwhile their understanding of educational theories would be enhanced and their critical thinking would grow. Moreover, their research ability would be improved through finding questions, formulating research hypothesis, planning, collecting& analyzing data, and so on.

Through the course, students learn how to apply the theories and research methods learned in the major synthetically; grasp the basic skills of choosing the thesis title, literature review, research design, and the basic rules of academic writing as well. As a preparation for thesis working, this course provides synthetic training of research through lectures and exercises. It covers four main topics: choosing the thesis title, literature review, research design, and confirmation defense of the thesis.

100401043001 Graduation Dissertation (4 credits)

Through the process of thesis, students learn how to investigate and reveal the problems and solve them, and master the ways to express and communicate research results. This course provides an opportunity for students to practice how to set up a program, gather information, analyze data and interpret outcome, and learn to deliver one’s own problem-solving suggestions. It is a whole process of doing research. Through this process students will develop their awareness of problem, polish their research ability .Students need to applying the knowledge and skill comprehensively for accomplishing the task. The main links of graduation thesis include planning, topic selection, commitment, thesis proposal, literature review, foreign literature translation, thesis writing, thesis defense, merit rating, summary and so on.
