Three years generally, the maximum school years are not longer than 7 years (including the extension time).

3. Core Courses and Introduction
Film Theory Research
Through in-depth study of the nature, characteristics and laws of the film art in this course, deepen the understanding of the basic content and basic laws of the film art theory, and lay a solid theoretical foundation for the future thesis writing.This course is based on teacher’s teaching and discussion between the teacher and students. The content of the course includes:
- the teacher teaching content includes: the basic characteristics of the film art, image and video awareness, the movie camera language, sound and hearing beauty, montage, long shots, the creation of film and Television Arts, visual arts appreciation and criticism of content
- students report on their own understanding of the stage of the film theory and the existence of the progress of the question, the teachers and students together discuss the new progress of the film theory
- the reading report, communication and discussion of the related literature of film theory
Research on the History of World Cinema
By means of in-depth exploration into the development course of world film, this course requires students to master basic vein and basic law of the world film development, deepen understanding of the world film history of science, achieve the combination of rational thinking and perceptual cognition, and thus achieve the deepening of theoretical study and the sublimation.
This course is based on teacher’s teaching and discussion between the teacher and students. The contents include:
- the teacher divides the unit to teach the world film history from film appearance to twenty-first Century: former film and film appearance, The silent era of world film, The beginning of the sound film era, Italian new realism films, French new wave, British free film movement, Soviet after the war and Russian films, the Asian film, Spanish language film, contemporary European films and Hollywood films.
- students choose one or several stages of the film as the research object, weekly report their achievements at the end of the teacher’s teaching;
- combined with the reading of literature data in the history of the world film history, the teachers and students jointly introduced, analyzed and discussed the new progress in the study of the history of world cinema.
Study of the History and Theory of Chinese Opera
This course aims to train doctoral students to build a vision and create capacity of researching the national identity as well as cultural and academic values of traditional Chinese opera,by means of discussing the writers,works,styles,performing,propagation,and the conventions coming with its development ,including such topics :
- research on the historical facts of the writers
- repertory reorganization and documents exploration
- discussion of developing clue
- major issues in history of opera,like “four operatic tunes”,Wei Liangfu’s reformation of Kunshan tune ,”the rivalry of Tang and Shen”, “the rivalry of Hua and Ya”
- the structures of the south and north musical forms , as well as the interactions between them
- research on the performing of Nanxi,Zaju and Chuanqi
- the propagation laws of classical Chinese opera,as well as the cultural factors and influence which are crucial for the living and development of it
Methodology of Chinese Opera Study
This course aims to train doctoral students to master the right methods, good thinking ability and activity academic sensitivity of studying Chinese opera , especially the classic style, by means of discussing the research methods to it, including the following topics :
- approaches to choose topics of academic papers and degree of Chinese traditional drama
- ways to make a summary of traditional opera research
- methods to collect materials of opera study
- research on the historical facts of the writers
- ways to reorganize and do textual research on documents
- ways to study the structure of the texture and the artistic achievement of opera
- research methods of the text and subject of opera
- ways to study opera theory
- research methods of acting,propagation and the culture of opera
- ways to write theatrical appreciation and criticism
- ways to write treatises of the subject
Research on Television Theories
Through in-depth study of the nature, characteristics and laws of the television art in this course, make doctoral students master the basic method of television theory research, and possess the profound theoretical basis, research field of vision, and steady research capabilities. The contents include:
- The concepts, characteristics and function of television
- The type of television management system and technical development
- Graphic language, voice and text of television
- The main types of TV programs and creative ideas
- The types and patterns of television art review
- Reading and communication of the related literature of television theory
- Students report on their own understanding of the television theory and the enlightenment about research works, the teachers and students together discuss the new progress and forefront issues of the television theory
Research on Chinese Television History
The course focuses on the development history of Chinese television as well as a research object, in order to make the doctoral students deeply understand and grasp the developmental trajectories, basic characteristics and special laws of the Chinese television industry, and possess the basic method and capability of television history research. The contents include:
- The main stages of Chinese television development history: Startup and the cultural revolution period; Recovery, reform and risen period; Transition period and so on
- The evolvement of Chinese TV program types, includes of television news, teleplays, TV Entertainment and TV documentation programs
- The development of Chinese TV media industry
- Reading and communication of the related literature of Chinese television history
- Students report on their own understanding of the Chinese television history, the teachers and students together discuss the new progress and questions of the research field
