Chinese Language and Literature (Teacher Education)

1. Program Description

The undergraduate program of Chinese Language and Literature aims to cultivate talents with a systematic and solid theoretical knowledge of Chinese Language and Literature. The students need to learn the basic theory, development history, research status and other aspects of professional knowledge .Graduate students ought to have the ability to independently carry on the creation of literary works and the language investigation and analysis, which can be used in the teaching and research work in the field of Chinese Language and Literature. Through the systematic training of the professional and related training direction, students are supposed to be professionals with good humanistic quality, solid professional knowledge, perfect knowledge structure, the highlighted sense of innovation and strong scientific research ability. Graduates are expected to be able to apply the professional knowledge to the actual work closely related to the Chinese language and literature.

2. Program Duration and Credit

This is a four-year undergraduate program, which can be completed within a minimum of three years and a maximum of seven years according to students’ specific circumstances.

A total of 152 credits are required upon the completion of the program.

3. Curriculum

Four modules of courses are offered for the program: Basic Curriculum, Essential Curriculum, Teacher Education Curriculum and Elective Curriculum. The Basic and Essential curricula are compulsory for a Bachelor’s degree.

The Elective Curriculum in the list includes extended disciplinary courses offered by the school into which an individual student is admitted, as well as cross disciplinary courses offered by other schools. Students can choose the extended and cross disciplinary courses according to their personal interests and career plans; however, credits should be approved by the School.

4. Core Courses and Introductions

100501012103 Contemporary Chinese   (6 cr.)

Prerequisites:

This course includes six parts: the introduction, modern Chinese phonetics, modern Chinese characters, modern Chinese lexicology, modern Chinese grammar, and modern Chinese pragmatics.

“The introduction " introduces the connotation and extension of modern Chinese, the history and characteristics of modern Chinese, the properties, content and tasks of the course. From phonemes, initials, finals, tones of modem Chinese phonetic element, the phonetics describes the characteristics, structure rules, speech sound-altering and prosodic composition and characteristics. Part of modern Chinese lexicology explains the ontology system, the source system and idiom system. Part of grammar interpretations the internal structure of regularity and external function attributes of modern Chinese morpheme, words, phrases, sentences etc. Pragmatics part analyzes the pragmatic rules of modern Chinese.

100501012105      Ancient Chinese          (6 cr.)

Prerequisites:

The course aims to develop and improve students' ability to read ancient classical works by means of ancient Chinese knowledge, to enable students to use tools to read the classical Chinese which with difficulty in general and  no modern annotation and punctuation, to cultivate students' correct analysis and teaching of classical Chinese works, help students to master the basic methods of classical Chinese teaching, to grasp the basic knowledge of ancient Chinese solidly and comprehensively, and deepen the understanding of modern Chinese.

The course is composed of ancient Chinese knowledge, anthology and common vocabulary. Knowledge of ancient Chinese focuses on introduction, commonly used tool, text, vocabulary, grammar and annotation of ancient books, rhetoric and ancient Chinese punctuation and translation, etc. Anthology includes about 45 ancient literature works, based on classical works of pre-Qin and Han Dynasties. The part of common words teaching the usage of about 400 commonly used words.

100501012201   History of Chinese Modern Literature     (6 cr.)

Prerequisites:

The course aims to understand the development process and characteristics of modern Chinese literature since the May 4th movement, to understand the various periods of important writers, classical works, literary thought, literary movement, literary criticism and the basic situation of the development of literary creation, and the main achievement and experience of modern Chinese literature.

This course presents the progress and characteristic of Chinese modern literature (1917-1949), discusses the occurrence and development of the Movement of May 4th in the 1920s , the left-wing literature and humanism literature in the 1930s , and the literature created in liberated area , the area governed by KMT and the occupied area in the 1940s, introduces the literary trend, literature movement, literature criticism and literature creation (different stylistic practice) , analyses and evaluates the important writers and writings from the angle of Marxism and aestheticism ,and summarizes main significance and achievement of Chinese modern literature .

100501012203       The Theory of Literature          (4 cr.)

Prerequisites:

This course can motivate students to think comprehensively, analyze rationally and research independently.  Students’ ability to comprehend text, appreciate literature and reflect on aesthetics will be cultivated. Their potential and intelligence of interpreting literature, attainment of understanding literature and cultural phenomena will be enhanced.

Students will be required to acquire the basic concepts and the specific propositions of theory of literature. The course will cover the characteristics of literature activities, the origins and evolution of the basic concepts, the present construction of theory of literature, the research methods of literature and theory of literature. Students will be able to comprehend and generalize the phenomena of literature and aesthetics in the abstract.

100501013002    History of Foreign Literature      (6 cr.)

Prerequisites:

The course is to teach the basic clue and the basic knowledge of the history of European American Literature, improve the ability of analysis and the level of appreciation of the phenomenon of foreign literature, especially the works.

The main content of this course is the review of the general process of the literary history of Europe and the United States, an important literary phenomenon and influential writers and works, to clarify the basic law of the development of foreign literature. Mainly includes: the literature of ancient Greece and Rome, medieval European literature, Renaissance European literature, seventeenth Century European literature, eighteenth Century European literature, nineteenth Century European and American literature. Covered the important literary thoughts and genres including humanism literature, classical literature, literary enlightenment, romanticism literature, criticism realistic literature and naturalism literature, aestheticism, symbol School of literature, etc.

100501013004   History of Chinese Contemporary Literature   (3 cr.)

Prerequisites:

The course aims to teaching the overall situation and the important works and writers of Chinese contemporary literature in the field of literature current, literary movement and literary creation since 1949 systematically. Enable students to master the development and the basic characteristics of the Chinese contemporary literature.

This course introduces the literature movements, literature trends and literature phenomenon of different periods in the contemporary China including Hong Kong and Taiwan, discusses creations of various styles including novels, essays, poems and dramas, and the achievements of important writers and writings, and reflects the problems and shortcomings of Chinese contemporary literature caused by various reasons. The main task of this course is to summarize and analyses the history of contemporary literature on the basis of historical pectination and text analysis.

100501013005      Course of General Linguistics     (3 cr.)

General linguistics can be defined as the science of language. The most important and immediate subdivisions of the subject are descriptive linguistics, historical linguistics and comparative linguistics.

These different and partial approaches have been called levels of analysis and the statements made about them levels of linguistic statement, including phonetics, semantics, phonology and Grammar. The part of linguistics that deals with material of speech itself is called phonetics. Phonology is concerned with the patterns and organization of languages in terms of the phonetics features and categories involved. Meaning is an attribute not only of language about of all sign and symbol systems, and the study of meaning is called semantics. Grammar is concerned with the patterns and arrangements of units established and organized on criteria other than those referable to phonetic features alone.

100501013007         Aesthetics       (2 cr.)

Prerequisites:

This program demands that students should grasp the concept and the theses of the aesthetics, comprehend the process and the laws of the aesthetics in light of arts experience, grasp the history of aesthetics and the trend of contemporary aesthetics and aesthetics culture and interpret aesthetic phenomena according to the theory of aesthetics.

Students will be required to acquire the history of aesthetics, aesthetic pattern, aesthetic experience, aesthetic psychology, and grasp the process of aesthetic in light of literature and art, understand the complex relationship between aesthetics and life, know the theory of aesthetic culture and interpret the phenomena of the aesthetic culture.

100501013008      Ancient Chinese Literature      (18 cr.)

Prerequisites:

The purpose of this program is to guide the students to comprehend the evolution, historical process and the rule of the development of ancient Chinese literature, let them acquire systematic knowledge of the representative writers, masterpieces, creation ideas, literary trends, themes and subjects, literary skills and styles, etc. In order to increase their cognition of ancient Chinese history and culture, to optimize their knowledge structure, to enhance their interests and capability of academic research.

This course mainly represents the development of literature in different stages in the history of China. The contents include the historical background of those stages, the track of the development of literary styles, the important writers and their works, their literary achievements and historical influences.

100401223002     Foundation of Secondary Education      (3 cr.)

Prerequisites:

Foundation of Secondary Education is a basic course in the program of teacher education. It is a compulsory theory lesson for those who want to get teacher certification. It systematically illustrates the educational concepts, which construct educational attainment of teachers, by regarding practical activity of secondary education as the studying objects, combining the basic problems of practice in basic education and through the absorption of the research achievements of contemporary educational theoretician.

This course is not the combination of sub-disciplines. Based on educational attainment, this course emphasizes the phenomenon and problems in basic education(especially secondary school and high school education). This course adapts various teaching approaches like previewing lesson before class, discussing in class, cooperative learning after class, close contacting with middle school students, and analyzing new curriculum to enrich students’ experience of practice and theory in limited teaching periods.

100401223003      Children Development and Learning     (3cr.)

Prerequisites:

It is a compulsory course for students majoring in teacher education. This course has two parts:

The first part -- Children's psychological development. It mainly involves theories of psychological development, the psychological characteristics of students in different age groups and the latest cutting-edge research findings. And theories applied in practice -- case analysis, the psychological mechanism behind the case;

The second part -- secondary school students' cognition and learning. It mainly includes the learning theories, middle school students' learning motivation, learning strategies, learning styles, etc. And it will introduce some major psychology genres’ main thoughts on learning such as behaviorism, cognitive psychology genres and the constructivism. Analyze the reason why today's students lack learning motivation, understand the current situation of students learning motivation and the latest research findings of students learning motivation, and understand the types and development of the students' learning strategies; Introduce the concept of learning style, and the characteristic of the current middle school students' learning styles, and learn how to implement individualized teaching on today's middle school students, and the latest research findings on learning style, etc.

100401223004 Teacher Language Expression and Application (2cr.)

Prerequisites:

The purpose of this course is to help the normal university students master teaching basic writing and language skills, turn the theory of professional knowledge and teaching skills into specific vocational behavior mode and skills, and tend to be standardized and highly efficient. The major contents include two parts. First is to analyze the structure and function of the teacher's writing and written expression skills, and to tell the students about the training target, principles, methods and basic ways, so as to enable students to form the overall understanding of the goals, methods and ways of teachers. Second is to analyze the basic expression skills of teachers, and give training to the teachers' professional skills of literacy which is one of the most important and core qualities to be improved.

100401043037       Modern Educational Technology       (2cr.)

Prerequisites:

Modern educational technology is a kind of public course of teacher education. Curriculum for normal school students' educational technology ability presents situation and subject of elementary and secondary school teacher's ability of applying information technology requirements, selects seven aspects of the normal students' teaching which is closely related to the exchange, research and practice. As a course with strong guidance, practicality and development for normal students, it will be able to meet the basis of normal students' information teaching, broaden our horizons, access and create teaching resources, grasp the technical support of teaching methods and skills, so as to easily control the 21st century classroom.

100401223005 Studies on Secondary School Chinese Curriculum Standards and Textbooks         (2cr.)

Prerequisites:

This course is the fundamental course in Chinese teachers' professional curriculum system, and a compulsory course for the normal students who are interested in middle school and high school Chinese education teaching. The course takes middle school and high school Chinese curriculum standard and teaching material as the research object, and aims to familiarize students with the basic ideas of curriculum standard, structure, content and requirement, the system structure and writing characteristics of middle school Chinese teaching materials, to improve the students' curriculum literacy, and to cultivate the wisdom of analyzing teaching material and using teaching materials.

100401223015   Middle School Chinese Instructional Design and Skill Training          (3cr.)

Prerequisites:

This course content and structure reflect the teaching ideas which is based on the teaching ideas that the theory as longitude, the skill as latitude, case and practice as the carrier, emphasis on practical, openness. This course requires students to experience in the teaching feelings, to internalize in practice, to achieve the teaching goal of the formation of the basic skills and establish the correct idea. It requires the way of teaching: instructor diversity, both college teachers and middle school teachers. Two-way teaching activities, including the teacher lectures, also have students prepare teaching and micro-teaching, on-scene observation, etc., and they are dispersed in practice and communication in the class.

100401223030        Middle School Education Internship   (6cr.)

Prerequisites:

Through education internship, student teachers will form teacher professional awareness and emotion, grasp specialized knowledge and professional skills, be equipped with the ability of automatically conducting teacher professional development through education, teaching and class management practice, which sets solid foundation for future teaching job.

Student teachers need to take part in all kinds of educational and teaching activities like observing other teachers’ lesson, preparing for the new lesson, trial teaching, giving lessons, managing class, attending research activities,etc.,during the whole educational practice period to improve their comprehensive professional ability which compose the inseparable part for being a secondary school teachers.
