Biology (Teacher Education)

1. Program Description

The BIOLOGY (Teacher Education) undergraduate program aims to cultivate researching, teaching and managing elite in biology field. To achieve this goal, the program provides and requires undergraduates to take and to study broad courses in art and natural sciences, especially those in biology, to get profound, wide and deep knowledge. Meanwhile, students should practice and master related biological experimental methods, techniques and skill. More importantly, all undergraduates must participate in real researching group to do certain scientific researches, to write the academic reports and articles, to know the exact creative methods and procedure. By doing these, graduates are expected to have teamwork abilities, scientific mindset and innovative qualities.

2. Program Duration and Credit

This is a four-year undergraduate program, which can be completed within a minimum of three years and a maximum of seven years according to students’ specific circumstances.

A total of 167 credits are required upon the completion of the program.

3. Curriculum

Four modules of courses are offered for the program: Basic Curriculum, Essential Curriculum, Teacher Education Curriculum and Elective Curriculum. The Basic and Essential curricula are compulsory for a Bachelor’s degree.

The Elective Curriculum in the list includes extended disciplinary courses offered by the school into which an individual student is admitted, as well as cross disciplinary courses offered by other schools. Students can choose the extended and cross disciplinary courses according to their personal interests and career plans; however, credits should be approved by the School.

100710093001 Plant Biology (I, Structure, Anatomy and Systematics of Plant) (3.0 cr.)

Prerequisites: Basic Biology or Introductory biology and Life Sciences

Plant Biology (I) is a core curriculum for the sophomore undergraduates of College of Life Sciences, Nanjing Normal University. It is not only considered as a compulsory fundamental specialty for those students who major in life science, biotechnology, environmental science, but also as a preparatory or pilot course that precedes such courses as plant taxonomy, plant physiology, plant ecology, etc.

This course concentrates on the bases and forms of the activities of plant life, elementary structures, growth and developments of plants, and phylogeny and evolution of the plant kingdom. It systematically introduces the basic knowledge, fundamental theories of the major branch fields of plant science and the rules of plant life activities. The content of this course mainly includes the brief history of plant science, major current research trends in plant science both at home and abroad, morphology and structure of plants, developmental growth and plant reproduction, plant diversity and plant classification, phylogeny and evolution of the plant kingdom, plants and their environments, and plant resource utilization.

100710093002 Plant Biology (II, Plant physiology)(3.0 cr.)

Prerequisites: Plant BiologyI, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Cell biology.

Plant physiology focuses on the laws of plant life activities; it is one of the main subjects of life science. Life activity of green plants is the ultimate source of all organic material on earth, it is the main way to use solar energy biologically, and it provides oxygen for human and other life’s activity. Therefore, higher green plants are the main objects of plant physiology research, its life activities are the key issues and main contents of plant physiology course. Students will be guided to understand the phenomenon and laws of plant life, and its relationships between plants and its external environments through studying plant physiological metabolism, growth and development physiology and stress physiology, etc. Further, students will be guided to master the law of life activity in plants and its regulation methods and techniques, and will be trained to have the capacity of applying plant physiology theories into research and practice.

100710093005 Animal ScienceI, Structure, Anatomy and Systematics of Animal) (3.0 cr.)

Prerequisites: Basic Biology or Introductory biology and Life Sciences

Animal Biology is the study of animals. It is one of the compulsory courses offered to undergraduate students who major in bioscience in a college or university. Animal Biology includes three parts. Part One covers the common life processes, including cell, tissue, organ, system structure, function, and the embryonic development of multicellular organisms. Part Two is the body form, functions, characteristics, taxonomic diversity, life-history strategies and phylogenesis of protists and animals, including invertebrate (Porifera, Cnidaria, Acoelomates, Molluscs, Annelida, Pseudocoelomates, Arthropods, Echinoderms, Hemichordata, and Invertebrate chordate) and vertebrate ( Fishes, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds and Mammals) , emphasizing evolutionary relationships, aspects of animal organization that unite major animal phyla, and animal adaptations. Part Three covers animals’ origin and evolution, evolution principles, geographical distribution and ecological principles.

100710093006 Animal Science (II, Animal physiology)(3.0 cr.)

Prerequisites: Animal ScienceI, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Cell biology.

Animal Science (II, Animal physiology) now comprises three levels of function: cell and molecule level,organ and system level and a general level. Molecular biology has shown that the ultimate components of the machine-proteins can be understood as machines in themselves. Cells, long considered the basic building blocks of organ­isms, are now understood as highly organized inter­communicating systems. The main content of this lecture is: cell physiology, function of nervous system, the special sense, blood, cardiovascular system, respiration, the gastrointestinal system, energy metabolism and thermoregulation, the urinary system, the endocrine and reproduction system.

Prerequisites: Basic Biology or Introductory biology and Life Sciences

The microbiology course includes the scope, significance and history of microbiology, functionalanatomy and diversity of prokaryotes, functional anatomy and diversity of eukaryotes, and morphology and diversity of viruses, microbial nutrition and growth, microbial metabolisms, microbial heredity and mutation, microbial ecology, microbial infection and immunology. This course gives the students the attention on the modern molecular microbiology frontier, microbial diversity, popular hot and public health events related with microbiology, and issues from research, development and manufacturing processes in microbiological field. Teaching types include teacher lectures, student discussion, reading outside of class, review composition, and visiting manufactories, etc. The course provides microbiology study website and English teaching website with various kinds of references, and current abroad textbook of Microbiology writing in English for supplementary reading.

Prerequisites: Chemistry

Biochemistry is the study of the molecular basis of biological processes in living organisms. It seeks to explain how a collection of atoms like carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen interact to build the bio-molecules necessary for life. With the accelerated accumulation of updated experimental data and biochemical novel results, Biochemistry has been becoming a growing discipline that provides insight into the related fields of genetics, immunology, microbiology, cell biology, and physiology. Its increasing basic fundamental knowledge advances our understanding of the chemical reactions and molecular interactions which govern living organisms and makes important contributions to help students learning other basic professional curriculum, and building a solid foundation for their future careers.

Prerequisites: Biochemistry, Zoology, Botany

Cell Biology is a discipline that she could explore and explain the transportation and metabolism of material, transition and usage of energy, transduction and transmission of information, and the formation and development of cell structure. She is one of the most rapidly moving areas of the life sciences, including a number of substantial advances in constitute, structure, and function & mechanism of the cell. The Undergraduate curriculum will introduce the cellular the component, the structure, the metabolism, the signal transduction, the expression of gene, the proliferation, the differentiation, the apoptosis, and the malignancy of cells. The students' ability of learning and practice will be enhanced and developed. This course will guide the students to enter the development of the discipline of front, and understand the basic theory of the practical significance and application prospect.

Prerequisites: BiochemistryCell biology, Zoology, Botany, Microbiology

As a newly emerging subject in area of life science, Genetics mainly discusses law and mechanism of inheritance and variation.Genetics is the basis of life science. It broadly overlaps with various courses and thus produces plenty of branch subjects. The development of genetics bears close relationship with numerous areas such as agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry, fishery, industrial fermentation, medical care, the development of national defense, etc. This course not only introduces basic discipline, law and theories of genetics, but also lays emphasis on the research technology, new trends and applicable prospect.

100710093017   Molecular Biology  (3.0 cr.)

Prerequisites: Biochemistry

Molecular biology is a relatively new scientific discipline that has revolutionized research in the life sciences. Molecular biology provides some answers to enduring questions in the biological sciences, such as the transfer mechanism whereby genetic information passes from one generation to the next. It also provides the necessary tools to approach and answer such questions. Researchers in human or veterinary medicine, biology, botany, microbiology and biotechnology have all benefited from this emerging revolution. The Molecular Biology Courses offered by NNU have a purpose: familiarize participants with or refresh the basic knowledge that leads to the understanding of the theory and mechanisms behind Molecular Biology research tools.

100401223002Foundation of Secondary Education   (3 cr.)

Prerequisites:

Foundation of Secondary Education is a basic course in the program of teacher education. It is a compulsory theory lesson for those who want to get teacher certification. It systematically illustrates the educational concepts, which construct educational attainment of teachers, by regarding practical activity of secondary education as the studying objects, combining the basic problems of practice in basic education and through the absorption of the research achievements of contemporary educational theoretician.

This course is not the combination of sub-disciplines. Based on educational attainment, this course emphasizes the phenomenon and problems in basic education(especially secondary school and high school education). This course adapts various teaching approaches like previewing lesson before class, discussing in class, cooperative learning after class, close contacting with middle school students, and analyzing new curriculum to enrich students’ experience of practice and theory in limited teaching periods.

100401223003Children Development and Learning     (3cr.)

Prerequisites:

It is a compulsory course for students majoring in teacher education. This course has two parts:

The first part -- Children's psychological development. It mainly involves theories of psychological development, the psychological characteristics of students in different age groups and the latest cutting-edge research findings. And theories applied in practice -- case analysis, the psychological mechanism behind the case;

The second part -- secondary school students' cognition and learning. It mainly includes the learning theories, middle school students' learning motivation, learning strategies, learning styles, etc. And it will introduce some major psychology genres’ main thoughts on learning such as behaviorism, cognitive psychology genres and the constructivism. Analyze the reason why today's students lack learning motivation, understand the current situation of students learning motivation and the latest research findings of students learning motivation, and understand the types and development of the students' learning strategies; Introduce the concept of learning style, and the characteristic of the current middle school students' learning styles, and learn how to implement individualized teaching on today's middle school students, and the latest research findings on learning style, etc.

100401223004 Teacher Language Expression and Application (2cr.)

Prerequisites:

The purpose of this course is to help the normal university students master teaching basic writing and language skills, turn the theory of professional knowledge and teaching skills into specific vocational behavior mode and skills, and tend to be standardized and highly efficient. The major contents include two parts. First is to analyze the structure and function of the teacher's writing and written expression skills, and to tell the students about the training target, principles, methods and basic ways, so as to enable students to form the overall understanding of the goals, methods and ways of teachers. Second is to analyze the basic expression skills of teachers, and give training to the teachers' professional skills of literacy which is one of the most important and core qualities to be improved.

Prerequisites:

Modern educational technology is a kind of public course of teacher education. Curriculum for normal school students' educational technology ability presents situation and subject of elementary and secondary school teacher's ability of applying information technology requirements, selects seven aspects of the normal students' teaching which is closely related to the exchange, research and practice. As a course with strong guidance, practicality and development for normal students, it will be able to meet the basis of normal students' information teaching, broaden our horizons, access and create teaching resources, grasp the technical support of teaching methods and skills, so as to easily control the 21st century classroom.

100401223012 Studies on Secondary School Biology Curriculum Standards and Textbooks     (2cr.)

Prerequisites:

This course is the fundamental course in biology teachers' professional curriculum system, and a compulsory course for the normal students who are interested in middle school and high school biology education teaching. The course takes middle school and high school biology curriculum standard and teaching material as the research object, and aims to familiarize students with the basic ideas of curriculum standard, structure, content and requirement, the system structure and writing characteristics of middle school biology teaching materials, to improve the students' curriculum literacy, and to cultivate the wisdom of analyzing teaching material and using teaching materials.

100401223022Middle School BiologyInstructionalDesign and Skill Training       (3cr.)

Prerequisites:

This course content and structure reflect the teaching ideas which is based on the teaching ideas that the theory as longitude, the skill as latitude, case and practice as the carrier, emphasis on practical, openness. This course requires students to experience in the teaching feelings, to internalize in practice, to achieve the teaching goal of the formation of the basic skills and establish the correct idea. It requires the way of teaching: instructor diversity, both college teachers and middle school teachers. Two-way teaching activities, including the teacher lectures, also have students prepare teaching and micro-teaching, on-scene observation, etc., and they are dispersed in practice and communication in the class.

100401223030Middle School Education Internship   (6cr.)

Prerequisites:

Through education internship, student teachers will form teacher professional awareness and emotion, grasp specialized knowledge and professional skills, be equipped with the ability of automatically conducting teacher professional development through education, teaching and class management practice, which sets solid foundation for future teaching job.

Student teachers need to take part in all kinds of educational and teaching activities like observing other teachers’ lesson, preparing for the new lesson, trial teaching, giving lessons, managing class, attending research activities,etc.,during the whole educational practice period to improve their comprehensive professional ability which compose the inseparable part for being a secondary school teachers.
